The Greatest Blessing We Have Already Received
Scripture: Matthew 13:10–17
When we pray to God, we ask for many things.
We pray for good health and peace for our families. We ask God to resolve financial difficulties and open doors that seem closed.
Sometimes, we begin to think that we have received God’s blessing only when we can see a clear answer to our prayers.
But in today’s passage, Jesus invites us to recognize a blessing we have already received.
“But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.” (Matthew 13:16)
Jesus did not speak about the disciples’ wealth or success. He called them blessed because they could see Him and hear His words.
Hearing the Same Word Does Not Mean Everyone Understands
After Jesus told the parable of the sower, His disciples came to Him with a question.
“Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
Jesus answered that the knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven had been given to them, but not to others.
These mysteries were not hidden information that people could discover through their own intelligence. They were truths about God’s kingdom being revealed through Jesus Christ.
Many people heard Jesus speak. They witnessed His miracles and listened to His extraordinary teaching.
Yet not everyone accepted Him as the Messiah.
Some drew closer to Jesus, while others rejected Him.
Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus described people who saw without truly seeing and heard without understanding.
Their problem was not simply a lack of opportunity to hear God’s Word. Even while listening, they held tightly to their own expectations and refused to respond to what God was revealing.
Hearing God’s Word is not the same as surrendering ourselves to it.
Understanding Is a Gift of Grace, Not a Reason to Boast
Jesus told His disciples:
“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” (Matthew 13:11)
The important phrase is “has been given.”
The disciples did not understand the kingdom of heaven because they were naturally wiser or more deserving than others.
They frequently misunderstood Jesus. At times they were afraid, struggled with unbelief, and failed to understand the way of the cross.
Nevertheless, Jesus called them, taught them, and continued to lead them.
The same is true when we come to believe in Jesus Christ and gradually understand His Word.
It is not simply because we have attended church for many years or accumulated biblical knowledge.
It is because God opens our understanding through His Word and the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, the more we understand God’s Word, the more humble we should become.
We have no reason to look down on those who do not yet know the gospel. Without God’s grace, we too would remain unable to recognize Christ.
Those who understand this grace learn to pray patiently for others rather than judge them quickly.
The Promise Long Awaited Has Been Fulfilled
Jesus told His disciples something remarkable:
“For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” (Matthew 13:17)
The prophets of the Old Testament waited for the salvation God had promised.
Abraham received the promise that all nations would be blessed through his offspring. David received the promise of an enduring kingdom. Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah and the suffering servant.
They believed God’s promises, but they did not personally witness their fulfillment.
Now Jesus Christ had come.
The disciples walked with the Messiah whom the prophets had awaited. They heard His teaching and watched Him heal the sick and welcome sinners.
The salvation God had promised for generations was unfolding before their eyes.
Jesus would go on to bear our sins on the cross and rise from the dead, accomplishing the saving work God had promised.
Unlike those first disciples, we cannot see Jesus physically walking among us.
Yet we live after His death and resurrection. Through Scripture, we hear His words, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can believe in Him and know the salvation God has accomplished.
This is an extraordinary blessing that we can easily take for granted.
Even When Our Prayers Remain Unanswered
There are still unresolved problems in our lives.
We may pray for a long time without seeing our circumstances change. We may pray for someone we love while seeing little evidence of transformation. We may ask God for guidance and still feel uncertain about the road ahead.
At such times, we may wonder whether we have received God’s blessing at all.
But Jesus’ words invite us to reconsider how we measure blessing.
The disciples did not have trouble-free lives. They would face persecution, and the cross would bring confusion and sorrow.
Yet Jesus called them blessed because they could see Him and hear His words.
An unanswered prayer does not mean God has given us nothing.
We have already come to know Jesus Christ.
We have been brought to faith in the Savior who died for our sins and rose again.
And today, through His Word, we can hold fast to God’s promises.
This does not make our pain or practical difficulties insignificant.
But those difficulties cannot take away the saving grace we have received.
Sharing the Blessing We Have Received
Sharing the gospel with someone who has never heard it often requires patience.
We may explain the gospel many times without seeing understanding. Someone who once worshiped with us may eventually leave the church.
In such moments, we must remember that changing the human heart is not within our power.
We are responsible for proclaiming the gospel faithfully and serving others in love. But it is God who opens hearts to believe in Christ.
Therefore, we need not lose heart simply because change is not immediately visible.
We continue to share God’s Word, wait patiently, and love others without trying to control the outcome.
Above all, we must not forget the grace we ourselves have received.
We have been granted the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven.
We have come to know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah long awaited.
Through faith in His death and resurrection, we have been welcomed into God’s family.
This is the greatest blessing we have already received.
Even when much remains unfulfilled in our lives, the grace of knowing Jesus Christ is never a small blessing.
May we stand before His Word today with grateful hearts, remembering the grace we have received.
