The final scene of Genesis is quiet and deeply meaningful. Joseph lived to the age of 110 and came to the end of his earthly life. By worldly standards, he had achieved remarkable success. He became the ruler of Egypt, enjoyed honor and influence, and spent many years with his family. Yet, in his final moments, Joseph did not speak about his achievements. He spoke about God’s promise. Before his death, he said to the people of Israel, “God will surely come to your aid and bring you up out of this land into the land He promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Then Joseph made them promise to carry his bones with them when that day came. Why was this so important? Because Joseph knew that Egypt was never his true home. His heart belonged to the land God had promised. Genesis does not end with Joseph being buried in the Promised Land. It ends with his coffin remaining in Egypt. The promise had not yet been fully fulfilled. His coffin became a silent testimony that God’s work was not finish...
창세기의 마지막 장면은 조용합니다. 요셉은 110세를 살고 생을 마감합니다. 세상적인 기준으로 보면 그는 성공한 사람이었습니다. 애굽의 총리가 되었고, 부와 명예를 누렸으며, 오랜 세월 가족과 함께 평안히 살았습니다. 그러나 요셉이 마지막으로 붙든 것은 자신의 성공이 아니었습니다. 그는 하나님의 약속을 붙들었습니다. 죽음을 앞둔 요셉은 이스라엘 자손들에게 이렇게 말합니다. “하나님께서 반드시 너희를 돌보시고 이 땅에서 약속의 땅으로 인도하실 것이다.” 그리고 자신의 뼈를 그날 함께 가져가 달라고 부탁합니다. 왜 요셉은 뼈를 남겼을까요? 그는 애굽이 자신의 영원한 집이 아니라는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 그의 마음은 언제나 하나님께서 약속하신 땅을 향하고 있었습니다. 창세기는 놀랍게도 무덤으로 끝나지 않습니다. 요셉의 관은 애굽에 남아 있습니다. 아직 약속이 완전히 이루어지지 않았기 때문입니다. 그 관은 마치 이렇게 말하는 것 같습니다. “하나님은 아직 끝내지 않으셨다.” 그리고 수백 년 후, 하나님께서는 정말 이스라엘 백성을 찾아오셨고, 그들은 요셉의 뼈를 가지고 애굽을 떠났습니다. 요셉은 죽어서도 하나님의 약속을 증언한 사람입니다. 우리도 때로는 하나님의 약속이 더디 이루어지는 것처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님의 시간은 결코 늦지 않습니다. 믿음은 지금 보이지 않아도 하나님의 약속을 신뢰하며 기다리는 것입니다. 오늘도 우리는 현실보다 하나님의 약속을 더 크게 바라보는 믿음으로 살아가기를 소망합니다.
