A Prisoner Before the King, and a Simple Answer (Genesis 41:14–16) Pharaoh sends for Joseph. Joseph is brought out of the prison in haste, shaves, changes his clothes, and stands before the king. Within a single verse, Joseph’s position in life changes completely. Yet Scripture does not dramatize the moment. Even in this sudden turning point, Joseph calmly prepares himself to stand before the king. Pharaoh speaks to him: “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard that you can understand a dream when you hear it.” It is a moment filled with authority and expectation. A moment where Joseph could explain himself, prove himself, or defend himself. But his answer is simple. “It is not in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.” Joseph does not explain who he is. He does not recount his suffering or injustice. He does not claim ability. 왕 앞에 선 죄수, 그리고 한 문장의 대답 (창세기 41:14–16) 사람을 보내 요셉을 부르라는 왕의 명령이 내려진다. 요셉은 감옥에서 급히 나와 수염을 깎고 옷을 갈아입은 뒤, 왕 앞에 선다. 한 절 안에서 인생의 자리가 완전히 바뀐다. 그러나 성경은 이 장면을 감정적으로 묘사하지 않는다. 기적처럼 보이는 전환 속에서도, 요셉은 차분하게 왕 앞에 설 준비를 한다. 바로는 요셉에게 말한다. “나는 꿈을 꾸었으나 해석할 자가 없다. 네가 꿈을 들으면 해석할 수 있다고 들었다.” 왕의 말은 기대와 권위를 동시에 담고 있다. 이 순간은 요셉에게 자신을 증명할 수 있는 자리이기도 하다. 그러나 요셉의 대답은 의외로 단순하다. “그것은 제 능력이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 왕께 평안한 답을 주실 것입니다.” 요셉은 자신을 설명하지 않는다. 억울함도, 그동안의 시간도 꺼내지 않는다. 이 자리에서 요셉은 자신이 누구인지 말하려 하지 않고, 누가 말씀하시는지를 분명히 할 뿐이다. 이 고백은 요셉을 돋보이게 만들기 위한 말이 아니다. 왕 앞에서 하나님을 주어로 놓는, 아주 짧고 담담한 대답이다. 성경은 이 장면에서 요셉의 태도를 해석하지도, 보상과 연결시키지도 않는다. 그저 요셉이 이렇게 말했음을 기록한다. 그리고 이야기는 하나님께서 하시는 말씀으로 조용히 넘어간다.
