  풍요를 삼키는 기근, 그리고 깨어난 왕 (창세기 41:1–7) 창세기 41장은 이렇게 시작된다. “이 년이 지난 후에.” 사람은 요셉을 잊었지만, 하나님의 시간은 멈추지 않았다. 하나님은 감옥에 있는 요셉이 아니라, 왕의 잠을 먼저 흔드신다. 바로는 꿈에서 강가에 서 있다. 이집트의 생명줄인 강가, 풍요와 안정의 상징 앞에 서 있는 왕에게 하나님은 먼저 풍요의 모습을 보여 주신다. 살이 찌고 아름다운 일곱 마리의 소, 알이 굵고 좋은 일곱 이삭. 완전하고 부족함 없는 풍요의 그림이다. 그러나 그 풍요는 오래 머물지 않는다. 곧이어 흉하고 마른 소들이 등장하고, 동풍에 말라버린 이삭들이 나타난다. 그리고 충격적인 장면이 이어진다. 마른 것들이 살진 것들을 삼킨다. 좋은 이삭을 여윈 이삭이 먹어버린다. 하나님은 풍요가 기근으로 대체되는 것이 아니라, 기근이 풍요를 삼켜버리는 모습을 보여 주신다. 준비되지 않은 풍요는 스스로를 지키지 못한다. 꿈이 반복된 후에야 바로는 잠에서 깨어난다. 그제서야 그는 이것이 단순한 꿈이 아니라는 사실을 안다. 그러나 의미는 아직 모른다. 이 지점에서 분명해진 것이 있다. 왕은 깨어났지만, 해답은 아직 없다. 하나님은 위기를 먼저 보여 주시고, 그 다음에 해석자를 부르신다. 이제 무대는 준비되었다. 요셉이 다시 불려 나올 시간이다.

Genesis 40 looks like a prison story, but it is actually a story of proven faithfulness. Joseph does not speak about himself. He speaks about God. The dreams are interpreted accurately, and the interpretations are fulfilled exactly. Yet Joseph remains in prison. He is forgotten by people. This chapter teaches us a crucial truth: God’s work does not depend on human memory. Even human forgetfulness cannot delay God’s plan. Joseph’s story is not stalled— it is being precisely prepared for what comes next.

창세기 40장은 감옥 이야기로 보이지만, 실은 하나님의 신뢰가 증명되는 장면이다. 요셉은 감옥에서 사람의 기대를 말하지 않고, 하나님의 뜻을 말한다. 꿈은 정확히 해석되었고, 말씀은 그대로 이루어졌다. 그러나 요셉은 즉시 풀려나지 않는다. 사람은 요셉을 잊었기 때문이다. 이 장은 우리에게 중요한 사실을 말해 준다. 하나님의 일은 사람의 기억에 달려 있지 않다. 사람의 망각조차 하나님의 계획을 방해하지 못한다. 요셉의 인생은 지금 멈춘 것처럼 보이지만, 사실은 다음 장을 향해 정확히 준비되고 있다.

Joseph’s life seems to keep going downward. Sold by his brothers. Taken to Egypt. Becoming a slave. Finally, imprisoned by a false accusation. Yet Scripture never says, “God left Joseph.” Instead, right in the middle of the prison story, the direction quietly changes. Dreams Begin in Prison Two royal officials are placed in the same prison as Joseph. One night, they both have dreams— dreams full of meaning. Joseph does not dream. He receives no vision. Before moving Joseph, God moves other people’s nights first. Joseph Notices Faces Before Dreams In the morning, Joseph sees their troubled faces and asks, “Why do you look so sad today?” Before Joseph becomes an interpreter, he becomes a noticer of people. In Scripture, God’s work does not begin with power. It begins with attention. Joseph’s Confession of Faith When they say, “We have dreams, but no one can interpret them,” Joseph replies, “Do not interpretations belong to God?” Joseph refuses to take center stage. He draws a clear line....
