Whoever Acknowledges Me Before Others “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” — Matthew 10:32–33 The words of Jesus are strikingly clear. Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will acknowledge before My Father. Then He gives the opposite warning: Whoever disowns Me before others, I will disown before My Father. What stays with me is that Jesus does not simply say, “Acknowledge My teaching.” He says, “Acknowledge Me.” At the center of Christian faith is not merely a set of ideas or principles. At the center is Jesus Christ Himself. Faith, therefore, eventually reveals where we belong. To whom do I belong? Can I still acknowledge that I belong to Jesus when I am standing before others? 사람들 앞에서 나를 시인하면 “누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 시인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 시인할 것이요 누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하리라.” — 마태복음 10:32–33 예수님의 말씀은 아주 분명하다. 사람들 앞에서 나를 시인하면 나도 아버지 앞에서 그를 시인하겠다. 그리고 그 반대도 말씀하신다. 사람들 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하겠다. 여기서 마음에 남는 것은 예수님께서 단순히 “내 가르침을 인정하라”고 말씀하지 않으셨다는 것이다. “나를 시인하라.” 신앙의 중심에는 어떤 사상이나 원칙만 있는 것이 아니라 예수 그리스도 자신이 계신다. 그래서 믿음은 결국 관계를 드러낸다. 나는 누구에게 속해 있는가? 사람들의 시선 앞에서도 나는 예수님께 속한 사람임을 인정할 수 있는가? 사람 앞에서 예수님을 고백하는 것은 언제나 쉬운 일이 아니다. 사람들의 시선이 두려울 수 있다. 거절당할까 두려울 수 있다. 오해받을까 두려울 수도 있다. 때로는 침묵하는 것이 훨씬 편하다. 그러나 예수님은 사람들의 평가보다 더 중요한 장면을 보여 주신다. 땅에서는 내가 사람들 앞에 서 있지만, 하늘에서는 그리스도께서 아버지 앞에 서 계신다. 그리고 예수님은 말씀하신다. “나도 그를 시인하겠다.” 이 말씀이 참 놀랍다. 내가 사람들 앞에서 예수님을 고백하는 것만 생각했는데, 예수님은 아버지 앞에서 나를 인정하시겠다고 말씀하신다. 사람들이 나를 어떻게 평가하는가가 마지막이 아니다. 그리스도께서 나를 어떻게 말씀하시는가가 더 중요하다. 그러나 33절에는 엄중한 경고도 있다. “누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하리라.” 이 말씀 앞에서 베드로가 떠오른다. 그는 사람들 앞에서 예수님을 부인했다. 한 번도 아니고 세 번이나 부인했다. 그렇다면 베드로에게 모든 것이 끝난 것일까? 아니었다. 베드로는 자신의 죄를 깨닫고 통곡했고, 부활하신 예수님은 실패한 베드...

As I read Matthew 10, I find myself lingering over one sentence that Jesus repeats: “Do not be afraid.” He says it not once, but three times—in verse 26, again in verse 28, and once more in verse 31. But Jesus does not tell His disciples not to be afraid because nothing bad will happen to them. In fact, He tells them quite the opposite. A disciple is not above his teacher. If Jesus was misunderstood, His disciples may also be misunderstood. If Jesus was falsely accused, His disciples may also face false accusations. Jesus even speaks about those who can kill the body. The danger is real. And yet Jesus says, “Do not be afraid.” The first reason is that the truth will ultimately be revealed. People called Jesus Beelzebul, but their words could not determine who Jesus truly was. Calling the truth a lie does not make it a lie. Human judgment is not the final judgment.
