Heaven!

The wilderness is a place of testing throughout Scripture. Israel wandered there for forty years and failed repeatedly. Adam lived in the abundance of Eden yet fell to Satan’s temptation. Jesus entered the wilderness under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. After forty days of fasting, He faced Satan at His weakest physically—but He never failed. Satan offered Him three shortcuts: First, satisfy His hunger by turning stones into bread. Second, gain public recognition by jumping from the temple. Third, receive the kingdoms of the world without the suffering of the cross. Behind every temptation was the same invitation: “Abandon the Father’s way and choose the easier path.” Jesus answered every temptation with God’s Word, quoting from Deuteronomy 6–8. Where Israel failed in the wilderness, Jesus remained perfectly obedient. He is the true Israel. He is the last Adam. 광야는 성경에서 시험과 연단의 장소입니다. 이스라엘은 40년 동안 광야를 걸었지만 끊임없이 하나님을 원망했고, 결국 실패했습니다. 첫 사람 아담은 풍성한 에덴동산에서조차 하나님의 말씀보다 사탄의 말을 더 믿었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 달랐습니다. 40일을 금식하신 후 극심한 굶주림 가운데 계셨지만, 사탄의 유혹에 단 한 번도 흔들리지 않으셨습니다. 사탄은 예수님께 세 가지를 제안했습니다. 첫째는 떡 이었습니다. “네 능력으로 네 배를 채워라.” 둘째는 명성 이었습니다. “성전 꼭대기에서 뛰어내려 사람들에게 메시아임을 증명하라.” 셋째는 영광과 권세 였습니다. “내게 한 번만 경배하면 세상의 모든 나라를 주겠다.” 겉으로는 서로 다른 시험처럼 보이지만, 그 중심에는 하나의 유혹이 있었습니다. “아버지의 뜻을 버리고 더 쉬운 길을 선택하라.” 그러나 예수님은 매번 하나님의 말씀으로 대답하셨습니다. 놀라운 사실은 예수님께서 인용하신 말씀은 모두 신명기 6장과 8장이었다는 것입니다. 이스라엘이 광야에서 실패했던 바로 그 말씀으로 예수님은 승리하셨습니다. 예수님은 참된 이스라엘이십니다. 또한 예수님은 마지막 아담이십니다. 아담이 먹는 문제에서 실패했다면, 예수님은 굶주림 가운데서도 순종하셨습니다. 이스라엘이 하나님을 시험했다면, 예수님은 끝까지 아버지를 신뢰하셨습니다. 이스라엘이 우상을 섬겼다면, 예수님은 오직 하나님만 예배하셨습니다. 마태는 우리에게 단순히 “시험을 이기는 방법”을 가르치려는 것이 아닙니다. 먼저 우리를 대신하여 광야에서 승리하신 예수님 을 바라보게 합니다. 우리가 실패한 자리에서 예수님은 승리하셨습니다. 우리가 넘어졌던 자리에서 예수님은 끝까지 순종하셨습니다. 그리고 그 순종은 결국 십자가로 이어졌습니다. 우리는 우리의 승리 때문에 구원받는 것이 아니라, 그리스도의 승리 때문에 구원받습니다. 오늘도 우리의 소망은 내 의지가 아니라, 광야에서 사탄을 이기시고 십자가에서 죄와 사망을 이기신 예수 그리스도께 있습니다.

While John the Baptist was baptizing repentant people in the Jordan River, Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by him. Jesus did not arrive there by accident. He came with the clear purpose of receiving baptism from John. John tried to prevent Him, saying: “I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance for those who confessed their sins and turned back to God. Therefore, it seemed inappropriate for the sinless Jesus to receive it. But Jesus answered: “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus was not baptized because He had any sin of which He needed to repent. He was baptized because He willingly entered the place of sinners. From the beginning of His public ministry, Jesus identified Himself with those He came to save. John the Baptist proclaimed, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Yet it was not only his words that moved people—it was also the way he lived. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, a leather belt around his waist, and lived on locusts and wild honey. He sought neither comfort nor recognition. His simple lifestyle reflected complete dependence on God and reminded the people of the prophet Elijah, showing that God’s ancient promises were being fulfilled. Because John’s life matched his message, people came from Jerusalem, Judea, and the region around the Jordan. They confessed their sins and were baptized. True repentance is more than feeling sorry—it is honestly acknowledging our sin before God and turning back to Him. This passage challenges us today: Does my life reflect the gospel that I proclaim? God is looking for people whose lives match their message. May we prepare the way for the Lord through genuine repentance, humble obedience, and faithful living.

세례 요한은 광야에서 “회개하라. 천국이 가까이 왔다.“라고 외쳤습니다. 그러나 사람들을 움직인 것은 그의 말만이 아니었습니다. 그의 삶 역시 그 메시지와 일치했습니다. 그는 낙타털 옷을 입고, 가죽 허리띠를 두르며, 메뚜기와 들꿀을 먹으며 살았습니다. 화려함이나 세상의 인정을 구하지 않았고, 오직 하나님께서 맡기신 사명에 집중했습니다. 그의 삶은 구약의 엘리야를 떠올리게 했고, 하나님께서 오래전 약속하신 예언이 이루어지고 있음을 보여 주었습니다. 그의 삶과 메시지는 사람들의 마음을 움직였습니다. 예루살렘과 유대와 요단강 주변에서 많은 사람들이 광야로 나아왔고, 자신의 죄를 숨기지 않고 고백하며 세례를 받았습니다. 참된 회개는 단순한 후회가 아니라 하나님 앞에서 자신의 죄를 인정하고 삶의 방향을 돌이키는 것입니다. 오늘도 하나님은 우리에게 같은 질문을 하십니다. “너의 삶은 네가 전하는 복음과 일치하고 있는가?” 주님께서는 화려한 사람보다 준비된 사람을 사용하십니다. 말보다 삶으로, 외식보다 진실한 회개로 주님의 길을 준비하는 우리가 되기를 소망합니다.

God is not only the One who calls us—He is the One who faithfully leads us to the end. Joseph obeyed God’s command and fled to Egypt. He did not know how long he would stay there, but he trusted God and waited until God spoke again. After Herod died, the angel appeared once more in a dream and said, “Get up. Take the child and His mother and go back to the land of Israel.” Joseph responded just as he had before. “So Joseph got up…” Matthew repeats this simple phrase because it reveals Joseph’s character. He was not known for powerful speeches or public leadership. He was known for his faithful obedience. Even on the journey home, God continued to guide him. When Joseph learned that Archelaus was ruling Judea, he became afraid. God did not rebuke his fear. Instead, He graciously guided him again in a dream and led him to Galilee, where Jesus grew up in Nazareth. Nazareth was an ordinary town, often looked down upon by others. Yet God chose that humble place as part of His perfect plan. ...

하나님은 우리를 부르시는 분일 뿐 아니라, 끝까지 인도하시는 분이십니다. 요셉은 하나님의 말씀을 따라 애굽으로 피했습니다. 언제 돌아갈 수 있을지 몰랐지만, 하나님께서 다시 말씀하실 때까지 기다렸습니다. 그리고 헤롯이 죽은 후, 하나님은 다시 꿈으로 요셉을 찾아오셨습니다. “일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 돌아가라.” 요셉의 반응은 이전과 똑같았습니다. “요셉은 일어나…” 마태복음은 이 표현을 여러 번 반복합니다. 요셉은 뛰어난 웅변가도 아니었고, 위대한 지도자로 소개되지도 않습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님의 말씀을 들을 때마다 순종했습니다. 그것이 요셉의 가장 큰 믿음이었습니다. 이스라엘로 돌아오는 길에서도 하나님은 계속해서 인도하셨습니다. 요셉은 유대를 다스리는 아르켈라오를 두려워했습니다. 하나님은 그의 두려움을 꾸짖지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 다시 꿈으로 말씀하시며 갈릴리 나사렛으로 인도하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리의 믿음뿐 아니라 우리의 연약함도 아시는 아버지이십니다. 마태는 마지막으로 예수님께서 나사렛에서 자라신 것도 하나님의 계획 안에 있었다고 말합니다. 세상 사람들은 나사렛을 주목하지 않았습니다. 작고 평범하며, 때로는 무시받던 동네였습니다. 그러나 하나님은 가장 낮은 곳을 통해 가장 위대한 구원의 역사를 이루셨습니다. 우리의 삶도 때로는 나사렛처럼 평범해 보일 수 있습니다. 아무도 알아주지 않는 자리, 눈에 띄지 않는 사역, 작은 순종의 반복일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 바로 그 자리에서 자신의 계획을 이루십니다. 오늘도 하나님은 우리를 한 걸음씩 인도하십니다. 모든 길을 한 번에 보여 주시지는 않지만, 다음 걸음을 말씀하시고, 순종하는 사람을 끝까지 책임지십니다. 하나님은 시작만 하시는 분이 아니라, 끝까지 신실하게 인도하시는 하나님이십니다.

When the wise men did not return, King Herod was furious. In his anger, he ordered that every boy two years old and under in Bethlehem and the surrounding region be killed. It is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the Bible. The cries of grieving mothers must have filled the streets. Matthew explains this tragedy by quoting the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation. Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” At first glance, this passage seems to be only about sorrow. But when we continue reading Jeremiah 31, we discover something remarkable. God does not ignore Rachel’s tears. Instead, He says, “Keep your voice from weeping… there is hope for your future.” Later in the same chapter, God promises a New Covenant. Matthew intentionally points us to that hope.
