Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with the picture of two builders.
One builds his house on rock.
The other builds his house on sand.
Both build a house.
Both hear the words of Jesus.
And both face the same storm.
The rain falls.
The floods come.
The winds blow.
Yet the results are completely different.
One house remains standing.
The other falls, and Jesus says, “Great was the fall of it.”
The difference is not the appearance of the house.
The difference is the foundation.
Both Heard the Words of Jesus
The wise man hears the words of Jesus and puts them into practice.
The foolish man also hears them.
His problem is not ignorance.
His problem is that he hears but does not obey.
This means the parable is not simply a comparison between people who go to church and people who do not.
It is a warning to those who have heard the Word.
Listening to many sermons does not automatically mean that our lives are built on the rock.
Knowing the Bible does not automatically make us wise.
Jesus says:
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them.”
Biblical wisdom is not merely knowing the truth.
It is building our lives according to the truth we have heard.
Storms Come to Both Houses
The house built on the rock is not protected from the storm.
Rain still falls.
Floods still come.
Winds still strike the house.
Following Jesus does not mean that suffering will never enter our lives.
Christians experience sickness, disappointment, financial difficulties, broken relationships, grief, and seasons when ministry itself becomes painful.
The difference between the two houses is not whether a storm comes.
The difference is what holds the house when the storm arrives.
The house on the rock remains standing because of its foundation.
Storms Reveal Foundations
Before the storm, the two houses may have looked very similar.
The foundation was hidden.
But when the storm came, what had been hidden became visible.
The same can be true of our faith.
Religious language can look impressive.
Ministry can look successful.
A person may have a title, reputation, or long Christian history.
But trials often reveal what our lives are actually resting upon.
And in the context of Matthew 7, the storm points beyond the difficulties of this life.
Jesus has just spoken about “that day,” when people will stand before Him.
So this parable ultimately asks an eternal question:
Will the life I am building stand before God?
Building on the Rock
Throughout Scripture, Christ is our rock.
But in this particular passage Jesus explains what building on the rock looks like:
hearing His words and doing them.
To build on the rock is to receive the words of Jesus as the authority for our lives and to live under His lordship.
This does not mean perfect obedience.
Believers still fail.
We still need grace.
But when the Word exposes our sin, we do not ultimately say,
“God must change His Word to agree with me.”
Instead, we say,
“Lord, Your Word is right. Change me.”
Repentance itself is part of a life built upon the rock.
Jesus Spoke With Authority
When Jesus finished speaking, the crowds were astonished.
Matthew tells us why.
Jesus taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Jesus did not merely offer another religious opinion.
Throughout the Sermon on the Mount He declared:
“But I say to you.”
And at the end He says:
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them…”
Jesus places His own words at the foundation of human life.
He is not merely a teacher offering helpful advice.
He speaks with divine authority.
From Amazement to Obedience
The crowds were amazed by Jesus.
But amazement is not the same as obedience.
We can hear a sermon and say,
“That was powerful.”
We can read Scripture and say,
“That is beautiful.”
Yet Jesus asks a deeper question:
Will you build your life on My words?
Every day we are building.
We build through the choices we make, the people we forgive, the way we use money, the way we treat others, what we do when no one is watching, and what we choose when our desires conflict with the Word of God.
Storms will come.
And one day every life will stand before God.
On that day, the most important question will not be how impressive the house looked.
The question will be:
What was it built upon?
Do not stop at admiring the words of Jesus.
Hear them.
Trust Him.
Obey Him.
And build your life upon the rock.
True wisdom is not merely hearing the words of Jesus, but building our whole life upon them.
