Jesus began His public ministry with a simple yet powerful message:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
This was more than a call to improve one’s behavior.
It was the announcement that the King had come.
The Kingdom of God had arrived because the King Himself was present.
True repentance is more than feeling sorry for sin.
It is turning away from self-rule and joyfully submitting to Jesus as King.
Immediately after proclaiming the kingdom, Jesus walked along the Sea of Galilee and called ordinary fishermen.
Peter and Andrew were not scholars or religious leaders.
They were simply working at their daily jobs.
Yet Jesus came to them first and said,
“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Notice the promise.
Jesus did not say,
“Make yourselves into better people.”
He said,
“I will make you.”
Disciples are not self-made.
They are transformed by Christ.
Peter, Andrew, James, and John immediately left their nets, their boats, and even their family business to follow Jesus.
Why?
Because the authority of the King was greater than everything they left behind.
Matthew’s focus is not primarily on the disciples’ sacrifice.
His focus is on the authority and grace of Jesus Christ.
The King calls.
The King transforms.
The King sends.
That same call continues today.
Jesus still says,
“Follow Me.”
Our hope is not in our ability to follow perfectly but in the One who first called us and faithfully continues His work in us.
The King who called fishermen is still calling ordinary people to become His disciples.
