When Jesus went up the mountain, He began teaching His disciples.
The Beatitudes are not a checklist for earning God’s blessing.
They are a portrait of those who belong to the Kingdom of Heaven.
The poor in spirit recognize their complete dependence on God.
They know they have nothing to offer apart from His grace.
Those who mourn grieve not only over life’s pain but also over sin and the brokenness of the world.
God promises to comfort them.
The meek are not weak.
Biblical meekness is strength under God’s control.
Jesus Himself displayed perfect meekness by submitting to the Father’s will, even to the cross.
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness desire God’s will more than anything else.
Just as food and water sustain physical life, righteousness is the deepest longing of the new heart.
God promises that such people will be fully satisfied.
These blessings are perfectly fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
He was poor in spirit, meek, deeply grieved over sin, and passionately committed to the Father’s righteousness.
As we follow Him, the Holy Spirit shapes us to become people who increasingly reflect His character.
True blessedness is not found in wealth, comfort, or success.
It is found in belonging to Christ and living as citizens of His Kingdom.
