When Jesus speaks about divorce, He does not focus merely on legal procedure.
People could easily reduce the issue to a technical question: “As long as I give a certificate of divorce, have I done what the Law requires?”
Jesus goes deeper.
The real question is not simply whether the paperwork was correct.
The deeper question is whether the marriage covenant is being treated with the faithfulness God intended.
The provision in Deuteronomy 24 did not celebrate divorce. It regulated a broken situation and offered protection in a culture where a woman could be left vulnerable.
Later, in Matthew 19, Jesus explains that Moses permitted divorce because of human hardness of heart, but that this was not God’s original design.
Jesus points back to creation.
Marriage is more than a contract between two people.
It is a covenantal union in which two become one.
Therefore, the first question should not be:
“How easily can I leave this relationship?”
It should be:
“How can I remain faithful to the covenant God has entrusted to me?”
This passage should not be used carelessly to condemn people who have been deeply wounded by marriage.
Nor should it be applied in a way that traps someone in abuse or serious danger. Situations involving safety require wise pastoral care, protection, and sometimes legal intervention.
But Jesus does clearly challenge the casual abandonment of marriage for selfish or trivial reasons.
And this teaching ultimately points us to Christ.
The Bible presents Jesus as the Bridegroom and His people as His bride.
We have often been unfaithful to God.
Yet Christ did not cast His people away.
He loved the church and gave Himself for her.
The cross is the clearest picture of covenant love.
The world often loves as long as love remains convenient.
Christ loves with faithfulness, sacrifice, and self-giving grace.
Christian marriage will never reflect that love perfectly, but it is called to point toward it.
Marriage is not simply about staying together.
It is about learning covenant faithfulness.
And the perfect model of that faithfulness is Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for His bride.
