The question asked by the wise men shook the entire city of Jerusalem:
“Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews?”
King Herod was deeply troubled because he feared losing his throne.
The people of Jerusalem were also afraid because they knew Herod’s cruel character.
Instead of rejoicing at the birth of the Messiah, fear filled the city.
Herod gathered the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and asked where the Messiah was to be born.
They answered immediately:
“In Bethlehem of Judea.”
They knew the prophecy of Micah very well.
Yet they never went to Bethlehem.
The distance from Jerusalem to Bethlehem was short, but their hearts remained far from the King.
In contrast, the wise men traveled a great distance because they longed to find Him.
Matthew quietly asks every reader an important question:
Do you simply know God’s Word, or do you follow it?
God chose the small town of Bethlehem to bring the greatest King into the world.
Throughout Scripture, God often works through what seems small and insignificant.
He chose Jacob instead of Esau, David instead of his older brothers, and Bethlehem instead of a great city.
Today, God is still looking for people who will respond to His Word with faith and obedience.
The Scriptures clearly point us to the King.
The question is whether we are willing to follow where God’s Word leads.
