The Gospel of Matthew begins with a genealogy.
To many readers, it may seem like a simple list of names. Yet it is one of the strongest testimonies to God’s faithfulness.
This genealogy tells the story of a God who always keeps His promises.
God made a covenant with Abraham.
He promised an everlasting kingdom to David.
Through generations of kings, failures, exile, and centuries of silence, God never forgot His word.
The people in this genealogy were far from perfect.
Abraham failed.
Judah sinned.
David fell.
Rahab and Ruth were outsiders who found grace through faith.
Many others are known only by their names.
Yet God used every generation to prepare the way for the Messiah.
When the genealogy reaches Joseph, Matthew changes the pattern.
He does not write, “Joseph fathered Jesus.”
Instead, he calls Joseph “the husband of Mary,” and says that Jesus was born of Mary.
Matthew wants us to see that Jesus’ birth was not merely a human event but the work of God.
The genealogy ends with Jesus Christ—the fulfillment of every promise God had made.
Genesis ended with Joseph’s coffin waiting in Egypt.
Matthew begins with the promised Savior entering the world.
God’s promises never stopped.
They reached their perfect fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
If God’s timing seems slow in our lives, this genealogy reminds us to keep trusting Him.
Even when we cannot see His hand, He is faithfully working through every generation and every season to accomplish His perfect plan.
