What Matters Most at the End of Life
Genesis 48:1–3
Genesis 48 marks the beginning of Jacob’s final blessing.
Jacob is nearing the end of his life.
When Joseph hears that his father is ill, he brings his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to visit him.
Scripture records a moving scene:
“When Jacob was told, ‘Your son Joseph has come to you,’ Israel gathered his strength and sat up on the bed.”
Jacob was old and weak.
Yet he summoned his remaining strength and sat up.
Why?
It was not simply because he wanted to see his grandsons.
He had something important that needed to be passed on to the next generation.
What is striking is what Jacob says first.
He does not begin by talking about Joseph.
He does not review his achievements.
He does not even begin with the hardships of his life.
Instead, he says:
“God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.”
What was Jacob remembering at the end of his life?
Not his successes.
Not his possessions.
Not even his many struggles.
He remembered God.
More specifically, he remembered the God who appeared to him at Bethel.
Bethel was a special place for Jacob.
It was where he spent the night while fleeing from Esau.
He was alone, afraid, and uncertain about the future.
Yet it was there that God appeared to him and made a promise:
“I am with you.”
That promise sustained Jacob throughout his life.
There were failures.
There were fears.
There were seasons of sorrow and disappointment.
But God remained faithful.
Now, as Jacob approaches death, he speaks not about himself but about God’s faithfulness.
We often remember many things in life:
our successes,
our failures,
our wounds,
and our joys.
Yet in the end, what matters most is not what we have done for God,
but what God has done for us.
Jacob spent his final moments telling God’s story rather than his own.
And now he is preparing to pass that covenant blessing on to the next generation.
True faith remembers God’s grace and passes it on.
May we also live with grateful hearts, remembering God’s faithfulness and sharing His promises with those who come after us.
