God’s Covenant Continues
Genesis 48:5–7
As Jacob approached the end of his life, his concern was not his own death.
His concern was the continuation of God’s covenant.
That is why he made a remarkable declaration to Joseph:
“Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine.”
They were originally his grandsons.
Yet Jacob received them as his own sons.
This was more than adoption.
It was a covenant declaration.
Jacob was affirming that God’s promises would continue into the next generation.
Then, quite unexpectedly, Jacob begins speaking about Rachel.
“Your mother Rachel died beside me.”
Even at the age of 147, Jacob still remembered her.
His words reveal a lifetime of love and longing.
Rachel had died too soon.
She never had the opportunity to bear more children.
Yet God did not allow the story to end with loss.
Through Joseph, Rachel’s son,
Ephraim and Manasseh were born.
Now they were being received into the covenant family of Israel.
What appeared to be loss in human eyes became part of God’s larger plan.
This is often how God works.
There are moments when we think a story has ended.
A painful separation.
The loss of someone we love.
A disappointment in ministry.
An unexpected wound in life.
Yet God frequently begins a new chapter where we see only an ending.
At the place where Rachel’s story seemed to stop,
God’s covenant continued.
There were tears,
but there was also promise.
There was loss,
but there was also grace.
There was death,
but God’s plan remained alive.
Jacob saw this clearly in his final years.
God’s promises do not end with one person or one generation.
His covenant continues.
And even today, God is faithfully carrying His promises forward into the next generation.
