Jacob used an interesting image when speaking about Issachar:
“Issachar is a strong donkey.”
At first, this sounds like a compliment.
It speaks of strength.
It speaks of diligence.
It speaks of the ability to carry heavy burdens faithfully.
In the ancient world, donkeys were highly valued animals.
They were not glamorous,
but they worked steadily,
carried heavy loads,
and served faithfully.
Issachar is described as such a person.
However, Jacob’s words do not end there.
He continues:
“He saw that a resting place was good and that the land was pleasant, and he bowed his shoulder to bear burdens and became a servant at forced labor.”
At first glance, this seems surprising.
Why would enjoying a good land become a warning?
Why would settling in a peaceful place sound negative?
The problem was not the land.
The problem was comfort.
Issachar had strength.
He had ability.
But he loved comfort so much that he chose security over freedom.
He chose ease over challenge.
He chose comfort over calling.
Scripture does not only warn against laziness.
It also warns against excessive comfort.
Comfort can make people spiritually sleepy.
Comfort can cause people to forget their calling.
The same danger exists for us today.
God may bless us with peace.
He may provide stability.
He may give us a comfortable season.
But when comfort becomes more important than obedience,
we stand in the same danger that Issachar faced.
The same is true in our spiritual lives.
We may begin to think:
“This is enough.”
“Do I really need to be more committed?”
“Why move forward when life is already comfortable?”
At that moment, we may choose comfort over calling.
God gives rest to His people.
But rest is not the destination.
Rest is God’s gift that prepares us to continue following Him.
More important than a pleasant land is the will of God.
More important than comfort is the call of God.
May we remember God’s calling today and become people who walk in obedience rather than settling for comfort alone.
