Jacob’s blessing over Joseph is one of the most beautiful passages in Scripture.
He did not describe Joseph as a king.
He did not call him a mighty warrior.
He did not praise him for his wealth.
Instead, he said:
“Joseph is a fruitful tree by a spring; its branches climb over the wall.”
What a beautiful picture.
A tree planted beside a spring does not wither easily.
Even during seasons of drought, its roots continue to receive life-giving water.
It remains green.
It continues to bear fruit.
Its branches grow beyond the wall.
Its blessing does not remain for itself alone.
It reaches others.
This was Joseph’s life.
He was rejected by his brothers.
Sold as a slave.
Falsely accused.
Forgotten in prison.
Jacob describes these painful experiences by saying:
“Archers bitterly attacked him.”
Yet the next verse says:
“But his bow remained strong.”
Why?
Not because Joseph was naturally stronger than everyone else.
But because God’s hand upheld him.
Jacob calls God
the Mighty One,
the Shepherd,
and the Rock of Israel.
A shepherd never abandons his sheep.
A rock remains unmoved through every storm.
Joseph’s circumstances changed many times,
but the God who held him never changed.
God blessed Joseph from heaven.
He blessed him from the earth.
He blessed his family.
He blessed future generations.
Finally, Jacob called Joseph
“the one set apart among his brothers.”
People rejected Joseph.
God set him apart.
People believed his story was over.
God used him to preserve nations.
We also face arrows in life.
Misunderstanding.
Rejection.
Waiting.
Loneliness.
Pain.
Yet as long as the spring never runs dry,
the tree will never wither.
Those who are deeply rooted in God are not determined by their circumstances.
In time, their branches will grow beyond every wall.
God’s blessings are never meant to stop with us.
They flow beyond our homes,
our churches,
our communities,
and even to the nations.
May we become people who are deeply rooted beside God’s living water,
bearing fruit that blesses the world around us.
