Genesis 47:9–10
A Pilgrim’s Life, Yet Never a Wasted Journey
Pharaoh asked Jacob:
“How old are you?”
In response, Jacob summarized his life in just a few words:
“I have lived as a stranger and pilgrim.
My years have been few and difficult.”
This confession is remarkable.
Jacob had:
- great wealth,
- a large family,
- and the promises of God.
Yet he did not describe his life as a story of success.
Instead, he called it:
“A pilgrim’s journey.”
And truly, his life had been exactly that.
- He fled from his brother,
- spent many years in a foreign land,
- experienced family conflict,
- mourned Joseph for many years,
- and finally came down to Egypt during famine in his old age.
His life was not an easy road.
Yet through every difficult season,
God never abandoned him.
Jacob passed through many painful years,
but in the end, he arrived there with God still beside him.
And at the close of the passage,
Jacob blesses Pharaoh.
By worldly standards, Pharaoh appeared far greater and more powerful.
But Scripture reveals something deeper:
True blessing is found not in earthly power,
but in walking with God.
There are times when our lives also feel like the journey of a pilgrim:
uncertain,
unsettled,
and difficult.
But the road walked with God is never wasted.
We are not permanent citizens of this world.
We are pilgrims walking toward the kingdom of God.
And even now, God continues to walk beside us on the journey.
