Genesis 47:1–6
God Working Even Above Earthly Power
Genesis 47:1–6 shows Joseph’s family settling in the land of Egypt.
Joseph comes before Pharaoh and reports that his father and brothers have arrived from Canaan and are now staying in Goshen.
Then five of his brothers stand before Pharaoh.
Pharaoh asks them:
“What is your occupation?”
And they honestly answer that they have been shepherds since the days of their forefathers.
Although Egyptians looked down on shepherds, Joseph’s family does not hide their identity.
Surprisingly, Pharaoh not only allows them to live in Goshen, but even says that capable men among them may care for the royal livestock.
At first glance, this story may seem to highlight:
- Joseph’s wisdom,
- Pharaoh’s kindness,
- and the brothers’ response.
But behind every scene stands the unseen hand of God.
This family was actually very vulnerable.
They had left their homeland because of famine, entered a powerful foreign empire, and depended on the mercy of others to survive.
Yet God had already:
- sent Joseph ahead,
- prepared Goshen,
- and even used Pharaoh’s heart
to prepare a place for them.
Scripture repeatedly reminds us:
Earthly power is never outside the hands of God.
Kings, governments, empires, economies, circumstances, and even human hearts—
God is able to use all of them for His purposes.
This does not mean earthly power itself is God.
At times it can be corrupt or harmful.
But God remains sovereign above all things.
Joseph’s family did not survive by accident.
Even when they could not see it,
God was already making a way before them.
There are moments in our lives like this as well:
Unexpected doors opening,
help arriving suddenly,
unexplainable protection,
or a place prepared in unfamiliar surroundings.
And behind all of it,
God may still be quietly at work.
