Faith That Held on to God’s Promise Even in Death
Genesis 47:29–31
Jacob’s death was drawing near.
After a long life of 147 years, he was approaching the final chapter of his journey.
He called his beloved son Joseph and made a special request:
“Do not bury me in Egypt.”
At first glance, this request may seem unusual.
Why was Jacob so concerned about where he would be buried?
This was not simply a matter of choosing a family cemetery.
Rather, this passage reveals Jacob’s final confession of faith.
Jacob had spent seventeen peaceful years in Egypt.
He had been reunited with Joseph.
He had been protected during the famine.
He had witnessed his children and grandchildren prospering in the land of Goshen.
Yet despite all these blessings, Jacob never considered Egypt to be his true home.
He remembered God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and himself.
For Jacob, Canaan was more than a piece of land.
It was the land connected to God’s covenant promises.
That is why Jacob said:
“Let me lie with my fathers.”
This statement meant more than simply being buried near his ancestors.
Even in death, Jacob was declaring that he belonged to God’s covenant people.
Another significant detail is that Jacob did not merely make a request.
He demanded an oath.
“Swear to me.”
Though death was near, Jacob believed that God’s promises were still alive.
He entrusted his final days to those promises.
The closing scene of this passage is especially beautiful.
After Joseph swore to fulfill his father’s request,
Jacob worshiped God while leaning on the head of his bed.
He had not yet died.
Yet he was already giving thanks.
He had not yet returned to Canaan.
Yet he trusted that God’s promises would be fulfilled.
Therefore, he worshiped.
We often focus only on our present circumstances.
But faith looks beyond present realities and rests upon God’s promises.
Jacob did not focus on death.
He focused on God’s promise.
He did not focus on the grave.
He focused on God’s faithfulness.
That is why, in his final days, he chose worship instead of fear.
The same faith is available to us today.
Circumstances may change.
Health may weaken.
Years may pass.
But God’s promises never fail.
May we, like Jacob, hold firmly to God’s faithfulness and remain people of worship until the very end.
