In Amos 6:10, we find a chilling scene that shows just how severe God’s judgement is:
"When a man’s relative, the one who anoints him for burial, shall take up to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, ‘is there still anyone with you?’ he shall say, ‘No’; and he shall say, ‘Silence! We must not mention the name of the Lord."(ESV)
This moment highlights the depth of terror during God’s judgment. The people are so fearful that they dare not even mention the name of the Lord. In ancient Israel, calling on God’s name meant seeking His presence, favor, or help. But now, that same name becomes a source of dread and silence(10)
God’s judgment is so thorough that even those surviving to bury the dead fear provoking further wrath by speaking His name. His name , which was once associated with comfort and salvation, has now become so holy and fearsome that no one dares to speak it.
This underscores how far the relationship between God and His people has broken down. The people had ignored the warnings, lived in pride and indulgence, and failed to repent. Now it is too late - judgment has arrived.
This is a call to all of us: Return to God before it is too late. Do not wait until the day comes when even uttering God’s name becomes too terrifying. Let us live now in reverence, repentance, and obedience.
