Matthew 21:23-32
Thinking and Understanding
The priests and elders took issue with Jesus' action in the temple and demanded to know the source of his authority. Jesus responded by asking them where the baptism of John came from, which caused them to fall silent. Jesus said that the tax collectors and prostitutes who heard John's massage and repented would enter the Kingdom of God before the religious leaders who refused to repent.
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is the Lord of the temple who possesses heavenly authority. God's Kingdom is a kingdom where sinners who have realized their sins enter before those who consider themselves righteous. Are we not denying or rejecting Jesus' authority in favor of a lesser authority and lesser gain, like the religious leaders?
What lesson is God teaching us?
Those who repent and obey are the people of God's Kingdom. We cannot enter God's Kingdom on the basis of status, such as being a high priest or an elder, or through confession just with our mouths; we can only enter by obeying the Father's will. True faith is proved by obedience over time. our actions must match our words before God.
