It is often said that the final moments of a person’s life reveal what they have truly held onto throughout their journey.
Jacob’s final moments reveal exactly that.
As death approached, he gave one last instruction to his sons.
Although he would die in Egypt, he did not want to be buried there.
Instead, he said,
“Bury me with my fathers in the cave of Machpelah.”
Why was that place so important?
It was not because it was beautiful.
It was because it was part of God’s promised land.
It was the first piece of land Abraham purchased by faith while trusting God’s covenant.
Abraham was buried there.
Sarah rested there.
Isaac and Rebekah were buried there.
Leah also rested there.
Now Jacob desired to be laid beside them.
Even at the end of his life, Jacob refused to let go of God’s promise.
Egypt was prosperous.
Joseph held great authority there.
There was security and abundance.
Yet Jacob’s heart remained fixed on God’s promise rather than Egypt’s comfort.
He looked beyond his present circumstances to God’s eternal covenant.
Scripture records Jacob’s final moments with remarkable peace.
After giving all his instructions, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
The Bible does not simply say that Jacob died.
It says that he “was gathered to his people.”
For those who belong to God, death is not the end.
It is a homecoming into God’s everlasting promise.
Jacob’s life was not easy.
He fled from Esau.
He spent many difficult years in Laban’s household.
He lost Rachel.
For many years, he believed Joseph was dead.
His life included sorrow, waiting, and countless tears.
Yet through every season, God remained faithful.
And in the end, Jacob rested in peace because he held firmly to God’s promise.
One day, each of us will also reach the end of our earthly journey.
May we hold on, not to earthly success or possessions, but to the unchanging promises of God.
The beauty of a life of faith is not found in how impressive our life appears, but in whom we continue to trust until the very end.
May we live each day holding tightly to God’s promises, knowing that His faithfulness will carry us safely home.
