God Gives More Than We Expect
Genesis 48:8–11
Jacob looked at his grandsons.
He was old, and his eyes had grown dim. He could no longer see clearly.
Yet he had the boys brought near to him, embraced them, and kissed them.
Then he said to Joseph,
“I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children as well.”
Within this short confession are the tears of many years.
At one time, Jacob believed that Joseph was dead.
He thought that a wild animal had torn him to pieces.
No one told him the truth, and he lived for many years carrying the pain of loss.
To Jacob, Joseph was already a lost son.
Perhaps Jacob once thought:
“If I could see Joseph’s face just one more time before I die…”
That alone would have been enough.
But God did not stop there.
He not only allowed Jacob to see Joseph again,
He also allowed him to see Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.
Jacob was not simply looking at his grandsons.
He was witnessing the faithfulness of God continuing into the next generation.
We often expect only a small measure of restoration from God.
We think we would be grateful if He simply returned a little of what we have lost.
If a painful situation improved just a little,
if a closed door opened just a little,
if even one prayer request were answered,
we would think that was enough.
Yet God sometimes works far beyond our expectations.
He gives more than we ask.
He works more deeply than we imagine.
He accomplishes something more beautiful than we planned.
Of course, not every loss is completely restored in this life.
Not every tear immediately turns into joy.
Yet Scripture clearly shows us this truth:
God is not a God who gives grace sparingly.
Sometimes He adds blessings that we never dared to expect.
Jacob would have been thankful simply to see Joseph’s face again.
Yet God allowed him to see his grandsons as well.
This is the grace of God.
God’s grace does not merely return what was lost.
His grace often overflows beyond our expectations.
The same is true in our lives today.
Even when we cannot see it,
even when we do not understand it,
God is still at work.
And one day, we too may find ourselves saying, as Jacob did:
“Lord, I thought this alone would have been enough.
Yet You gave me blessings that I never imagined possible.”
God is a God who gives more than we expect.
