Jacob heard the astonishing news that Joseph was still alive.
Yet he did not immediately rush down to Egypt.
Instead, he stopped at Beersheba and offered sacrifices to God.
Why?
Egypt was a land of provision, but also a place of uncertainty and fear.
Canaan was the promised land, and Jacob now had to leave the familiar place of covenant and journey into the unknown.
So first, he sought God.
That night, God called his name:
“Jacob, Jacob.”
And God said:
“Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt.
I will go with you.”
God is not One who merely gives directions.
He is the One who walks with us on the journey.
There are seasons in our lives when we must leave familiar places behind.
New ministries, new environments, and new decisions often bring fear.
But when God goes with us,
even unfamiliar roads can become paths of grace.
Jacob eventually went down to Egypt, but he did not go alone.
God went with him.
