Creator God and Created Idols (Jeremiah 10:1-16)
만드시는 하나님과 만들어진 우상
1 Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of
Israel. 2 Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be
dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,
3 for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down
and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. 4 They decorate it with
silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. 5
Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot walk. Do
not be afraid of them, for they cannot evil, neither is it in them to do good.”
6 There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in
might. 7 Who would not fear you, O King of the nation? For this is your due;
for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is
none like you. 8 They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is
but wood! 9 Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They
are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing
is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. 10 But the Lord is
the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the
earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. 11 Thus shall you
say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish
from the earth and from under the heavens.” 12 It is he who made the earth by
his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. 13 When he
utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the
mist rise from the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. 14
Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by
his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. 15 They are worthless, a work of delusion; at
the time of their punishment they shall perish. 16 Not like these is he who is
the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is
the tribe of his inheritance; the Lord of hosts is his name.
1 이스라엘 백성아, 주님께서 너희에게 하시는 말씀을 들어라. 2 “나 주가 말한다.
너희는 이방 사람의 풍습을 배우지 말아라. 이방 사람이 하늘의 온갖 징조를 보고 두려워하더라도, 너희는 그런 것들을 두려워하지 말아라. 3 이방 사람이 우상을 숭배하는 풍속은 허황된 것이다. 그들의 우상은 숲 속에서 베어 온 나무요, 조각가 연장으로 다듬어서 만든 공예품이다. 4 그들은 은과 금으로 그것을 아름답게 꾸미고,
망치로 못을 박아 고정시켜서, 쓰러지지 않게 하였다.
5 그것들은 논에 세운 허수아비와 같아서, 말을 하지 못한다. 걸어 다닐수도 없으니, 늘 누가 메고 다녀야 한다. 그것들은 사람에게 재앙을 내릴 수도 없고, 복도 내릴 수가 없으니, 너희는 그것들을 두려워하지 말아라.” 6 주님, 주님과 같으신 분은 아무도 없습니다. 주님은 위대하시며, 주님의 이름은 크시고 권능을 지니셨습니다. 7 세계 만민의 임금니,
누가 주님을 두려워하지 않을 수가 있겠습니까? 주님은 공경받아 마땅한 분이십니다. 세계 만민의 모든 지혜 있는 자들 가운데에도, 모든 나라의 왕들 가운데에도, 주님과 같신 분은 아무도 없기 때문입니다.
8 그들은 모두가 한결같이 어리석고 미련합니다.
나무로 만든 우상에게서 배운다고 한들,
그들이 무엇을 배우겠습니까? 9 그 우상에게 얇게 펴서 입힌 그 은은 스페인에서 들여온 것이며, 그 금도 우바스에서 들여온 것입니다. 우상들은 조각가가 새긴 것, 은장이가 만든 공예품입니다. 그것에다가 청색 옷과 자주색 옷을 걸쳐 놓은 것이니,
모두가 솜씨 좋은 사람들이 만들어 놓은 것입니다. 10 오직 주님만이 참되신 하나님이시요, 주님만이 살아계시는 하나님이시며, 영원한 임금이십니다.
주님이 진노하시면,
땅이 지진을 일으키고, 그 진노는 세계 만민이 감당할 수가 없습니다. 11 너희는 우상들에 대하여 이렇게 선언하라. 하늘과 땅을 만들지 않은 신들은 이 땅에서 사라지고, 저 하늘 아래에서도 없어질 것이라고 선언하여라.
12 권능으로 땅을 만드시고, 지혜로 땅덩어리를 고정시키시고, 명철로 하늘을 펼치신 분은 주님이시다.
13 주님께서 호령을 하시면, 하늘에서 물이 출렁이고, 땅 끝에서 먹구름이 올라온다. 주님은 번개를 일으켜 비를 내리시며, 바람창고에서 바람을 내보내신다.
14 사람은 누구나 어리석고 지식이 모자란다.
은장이는 자기들이 만든 신상 때문에 모두 수치를 당한다.
그들이 금속을 부어서 만든 신상들은 속임수요, 그것들 속에는 생명이 없기 때문이다.
15 그것들은 허황된 것이요, 조롱거리에 지나지 않아서, 벌을 받을 때에는 모두 멸망할 수 밖에 없다.
16 그러나 야곱의 유산이신 주님은, 그런 것들과는 전혀 다르시다. 그분은 만물을 지으신 분이시요, 이스라엘을 당신의 소유인 지파로 삼으신 분이시다.
그분의 이름은 ‘만군의 주’이시다.
Main Idea
The prophet compared idols with God. Idols are made by
people and therefore have no power, but God, the creator of this world, has
power and wisdom.
예언자는 우상과 하나님을 대조합니다. 우상은 사람들이 만들었기에 전혀 능력이 없지만, 하나님은 이 세상을 창조하신 분이기에 권능과 지혜가 있습니다.

Understanding
Jeremiah sang a song of praise confessing his fear of God.
God is the one and only God with power. He is not only the everlasting King, but
he also has the power to judge. This is the God who is the portion of Jacob and
the one who declared the people of Israel his inheritance. However, the people
of Israel abandoned this God and chose idols. They tried to overcome their fear
of signs of nature with fancy idols ornamented with silver and gold. The
foolish Israelites would be put to shame, however, because, they continued to
rely on their own creations (vv.1-16).
예레미야는 하나님을 경외하며 찬양의 고백을 드립니다.
하나님만이 권능을 가지신 유일한 하나님이시고,
살아계신 영원한 임금이실 뿐만 아니라 심판을 행할 능력이 있는 분이시기 때문입니다.
바로 이 하나님은 야곱의 유산이요,
이스라엘을 하나님의 소유라고 선언하신 분입니다.
하지만 유다 백성은 이러한 하나님을 버리고 우상을 선택했습니다.
자연의 징조들을 보면서 갖게 된 두려움을 은과 금으로 꾸민 화려한 우상들을 만들어 극복하려 했습니다.
어리석은 그들은 이제 자기가 만든 것을 의지하다가 수치를 당할 것입니다(1-16).
Who is God?
vv. 1-7,10 Idols are created by the hands and tools of
people but God created all things with his transcendent power. Therefore,
unlike idols, which cannot speak, walk or proclaim anger or blessing, God blesses
and punishes the kings and wise people of all nations by his own supremacy. Therefore,
what we must fear isn’t the signs of heaven, but the God who created the
heavens; we mustn’t fear the religious policies created by man, but fear God
himself.
우상은 사람들이 손과 연장으로 만든 것이지만,
하나님은 초월적 권능으로 모든 것을 창조하신 분이십니다. 따라서 말도 못하고 걷지도 못하고 화와 복을 선포할 수 없는 우상과 달리,
하나님은 자신의 주권대로 열방의 왕과 지혜로운 자들을 벌하기도 하시고 복주시기도 하십니다.
따라서 우리가 두려워할 것은 하늘의 징조가 아니라, 그 하늘을 만드신 하나님입니다. 사람이 만든 종교적 제도가 아니라 하나님 자신입니다.
What lesson is God teaching us?
vv. 14-16 Don’t try to hold onto things made by the hands of
men or for the glory of man, but live according to the guidance of the Lord’s ‘Spirit’,
considering God our inheritance.
사람 손으로 만들고,
사람이 영광 받는 것을 손에 쥐려고 하지 말고,
주의 ‘영’의 인도를 따라 살고 하나님을 기업으로 여기며 사십시요.
Tip
10:11-13 All false gods
shall perish. They were created by humans, but the living God made and established the world by
wisdom and understanding (51:15-19). The false gods’ “instruction” (10:8) makes
people foolish, while God’s instruction makes people wise.
