The Inerasable Sins of Israel (Jeremiah 17:1-11)
1 “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars, 2 while their children remember their altars and their Asherim, beside every green tree and on the high hills, 3 on the mountains in the open country. Your wealth and all your treasures I will give for spoil as the price of your high places for sin throughout all your territory. 4 You shall loosen your hand from your heritage that I gave to you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.” 5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” 9 The heart is deceitful can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” 11 Like the partridge that gathers a brood that she did not hatch, so is he who gets riches but by justice; in the midst of his days they will leave him, and at his end he will be a fool.
Main Idea
Today’s passage talks about the judgement that would be brought on by the sin of the idol worshipping people of Judah, and then it introduces the God who repays people according to their actions, depending on whether they trusted in God or in people.
Thinking, and Understanding
God declared that Judah’s sin would be remembered forever because it was engraved with a pen of iron (vv. 1-2). Those who place their trust in man would be coursed, while those who confidently placed their trust in God would be blessed. The be like trees planted by water which bear fruit. This is because they had placed their absolute trust in God, who is giver of life (vv. 3-11).
Who is God?
Vv. 9-11 Our Creator God, who is the creator of all people, knows our hearts best. He knows our thoughts and our feelings through and through because he constantly examines and tests us. He knows how corrupt we are. Therefore, he does not acknowledge the achievements of those who trust in idols, and makes those who are greedy, like partridges, pay the necessary price.
What lesson is God teaching us?
Vv . 1-2 The sin of Judah, who entrusted themselves to idols, would not be erased, denied or forgotten before God. This was because they were so wicked and stubborn that their hearts were engraved with their sin rather than God’s commandments, and the horns of their altars were also engraved with their sin instead of the blood of atonement.
Let’s get ride of the idols in our lives before we love the ability to hear the word.
P. A : what is my idols in those days? Money? Myself?
I think that my interest in those day can be my idols.
