God, the Only Hope of Israel (Jeremiah 17:12-18)
12 A glorious throne set on high from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. 13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth, for they forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water. 14 Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. 15 Behold, they say to me, “Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come!” 16 I have not run away from being your shepherd, nor have I desired the day of sickness. You know what came out of my lips; it was before your face. 17 Be not a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of disaster. 18 Let those be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction!
Main Idea
Jeremiah confessed that he would not give in, despite being ridiculed by his enemies, and that he would not give up on his calling. He also entreated God to prove the righteousness of his mission, which he had carried out by placing his trust in God, through judgement against his enemies.
Thinking, and Understanding
Jeremiah prayed to God. First, he praised God, who is the only hope of Israel. This shows that Jeremiah trusted in God. Secondly, he plead for God to heal him and save him. this was because he had been hurt by witnessing the state of the people, who had been derisive of the credibility of the word he has delivered and hadn’t shown the slightest interest in returning to God. Thirdly, Jeremiah entreated God to prove his righteousness by destroying those who had mocked him. this was because by ridiculing Jeremiah they were ridiculing God (vv. 12-18)
Who is God?
God, not Jerusalem, was the people’s hope. God, not his temple, was the safe place of dwelling. So, those who had abandoned God and placed their trust in people would become as meaningless as words written in soil, which are easily erased by wind and rain. There is no power, sign or strength that can stand in GOD’s place. Let’s reflect on ourselves to see if we are not holding onto what is just an empty shell, instead of God.
Vv . 16-18 God is hope for those who ceaselessly serve the Lord and carry out the calling God has given them. If you are experiencing hardship right now because of the circumstances or people around you, trust in God, like Jeremiah, and try proclaiming that God is hope.
P A: What do I really rely on? Why do I get nervous as my pocket become lighter? May the Lord let me rely on you again. It was my decision when I left to mission field for the first time that ‘I will live as much as God has given me. if God give me to eat, then I can eat, and if God not give the food to eat, I will not eat.’
So far, God has provided me in abundance. There was no shortage. I hope I want to renew my heart and my decision to be fully rely on GOD.
