돌아올 길을 저버린 백성들

16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ 17 I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not pay attention.’ 18 Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what will happen to them. 19 Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing disaster upon this people, the fruit of their devices, because they have not paid attention to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it.  20 What use to me is frankincense that comes from Sheba, or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing to me. 21 Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘ Behold, I will lay before this people stumbling blocks against which they shall stumble; fathers and sons together, neighbour and friend shall perish.”’ 22 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, a people is coming from the north country, a great nation is stirring from the father parts of the earth. 23 They lay hold on bow and javelin; they are cruel and have no mercy; the sound of them is like the roaring sea; they ride on horses, set in array as a man for battle, against you, O daughter of Zion!” 24 We have heard the report of it; our hands fall helpless; anguish has taken hold of us, pain as of a woman in labor. 25 Go not out into the field, nor walk on the road, for the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side. 26 O daughter of my people, put on sackcloth, and roll in ashes; make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for suddenly the destroyer will com upon us. 27 “ I have made you a tester of metals among my people, that you may know and test their ways. 28 They are all stubbornly rebellious, going about with slanders; they are bronze and iron; all of them act corruptly. 29 The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain the refining goes on, for the wicked are not removed. 30 Rejected silver they are called, for the Lord has rejected them.”

16 “나 주가 말한다. 나는 너희에게 일렀다. 가던 길을 멈추어서 살펴보고, 옛길이 어딘지, 가장 좋은 길이 어딘지 물어보고, 그 길로 가라고 하였다. 그러면 너희의 영혼이 평안히 쉴 곳을 찾을 것이라고 하였다. 그런데도 너희는 여전히 그 길로는 가지 않겟다고 하였다. 17 나는 또 너희를 지키려고 파수꾼들을 세워 놓고, 나팔 소리가 나거든 귀담아 들으라고 가르쳐 주었으나, 너희는 귀담아 듣지 않겠다고 하였다.” 18 “ 뭇 민족아, 들어라. 온 회중아, 똑똑히 알아 두어라. 내 백성에게 어떤 일이 일어날지를 보아라. 19 땅아, 너도 들어라. 내가 지금 이 백성에게 재앙을 내린다. 그들이 이처럼 사악한 생각을 하였으니, 이것은 그들이 받아 마땅한 벌이다. 그들이 나의 말을 귀담아 듣지 않으며, 나의 율법도 무시하였기 때문이다.” 20 “스바에서 들여 오는 향과 먼 땅에서 가져오는 향료가, 나에게 무슨 소용이 있느냐? 너희가 바치는 온갖 번제물도 싫고, 온갖 희생제물도 마음에 들지 않는다.” 21 “그러므로 나 주가 말한다. 내가 이 백성 앞에 걸림돌들을 숨겨 놓아서, 모두 돌에 걸려 넘어지게 하겠다. 아버지와 아들이 다 함께 넘어지고, 이웃과 그 친구가 다 함께 멸망할 것이다.” 22 “나 주가 말하낟. 한 백성이 북녘 땅에서 오고 있다. 큰 나라가 온다. 저 먼 땅에서 떨치고 일어났다. 23 그들은 활과 창으로 무장하였다. 난폭하고 잔인하다. 그들은 바다차럼 요란한 소리를 내며, 군마를 타고 달려온다. 딸 시온아, 그들은 전열을 갖춘 전사와 같이 너를 치러 온다.” 24 “ 우리는 그 소식을 듣고, 두 팔에 맥이 풀렸습니다. 해산의 진통을 하는 여인처럼 불안하여 괴로워합니다.” 25 “너희는 들녘으로 나가지도 말고, 거리에서 돌아다니지도 말아라. 너희의 원수가 칼로 무장하고 있으니, 너희의 사방에 공포가 있을 뿐이다.” 26 나의 딸, 나의 백성아, 너는 굵은 베 옷을 허리에 두르고, 잿더미 속에서 뒹굴어라. 외아들을 잃은 어머니처럼 통곡하고, 슬피 울부짖어라. 멸망시키는 자가 갑자기 우리를 덮쳐 올 것이다. 27 “예레미야야, 내 백성을 시험해 보아라. 금속을 시험하듯 시험해서 도대체 그들의 정체가 무엇인지 밝혀 보아라. 28 그들은 모두 반항하는 자들이다. 모함이나 하고 돌아다니며 마음이 완악하기가 놋쇠나 무쇠와 같다. 모두 속속들이 썩은 자들이다. 29 풀무질을 세게 하면, 불이 뜨거워져서 그 뜨거운 불 속에서 납이 녹으련만, 불순물도 없어지지 않으니, 금속을 단련하는 일이 헛수고가 되고 만다. 그들의 죄악이 도무지 제거되지 않는다. 30 이제 그들은, 불순물을 제거할 수 없는 ‘내버린 은’일 뿐이다. 나 주가 그들을 내버렸기 때문이다.”

Main Idea

God granted the people an old path (the old law) and a watchman (prophet), but the people rejected them. In turn, God rejected even the valuable offerings given in worship and called a nation from the north to judge the people.

하나님은 옛 길(율법)과 파수꾼(예언자)을 보냈지만 백성들은 거절합니다. 하나님은 값비싼 제물로 드리는 예배도 거절하시고 북방에서 한 나라를 불러 심판하십니다.

Thinking, and Understanding

God spared no effort in trying to help his people to return to him before he carried out his judgement. However, the people of Judah continued to be obstinate and rejected God’s efforts. Eventually, God widely proclaimed that he had no choice but to send down the punishment the people deserved. After this, God told Jeremiah to become a smelter to refine the people of Judah by fire and reveal their identity. However, the people of Judah were nothing more than rejected silver that cannot be rid of impurities( vv. 16-30).

하나님은 심판을 행하시기 전에 돌이킬 수 있도록 세심한 배려를 아끼지 않으십니다. 하지만 유다 백성은 여전히 고집을 부리며 하나님의 배려를 거부했습니다. 결국 하나님은 마땅한 벌을 내리실 수밖에 없음을 널리 공포하십니다. 그런 후 하나님은 예레미야에게 유다 백성을 연단하는 제련사가 되어 유다 백성의 정체를 밝혀보라고 하십니다. 하지만 유다 백성은 불순물을 제거할 수 없는 ‘내버린 은’에 불과했습니다.

Who is God?

vv. 20-21 God desires the person giving an offering more than the offering itself. Therefore, even if an offering consists of precious frankincense or perfumed oils, God will not gladly receive it if it is given by someone who does not listen to and obey his word. Let’s make sure our worship is not a ‘comfort performance’ for other members of the church, but rather worship that consists of giving the ‘offering of our lives’ which follow God’s will.

하나님은 제사보다 제사를 드리는 자를 받기 원하십니다. 그러니 값비싼 유향과 향유로 제사를 드린다 할지라도, 말씀을 청종하지 않는 자의 제사는 달게 여기지 않으실 것입니다. 우리의 예배가 교인들을 위한 ‘위문공연’이 아니라 주의 뜻을 좇는 ‘삶의 예물’을 드리는 예배가 되게 하십시요.

vv. 27-30 God sent a prophet to examine the purity of the mixture of metals that was Israel. However, no piece of pure silver could be extracted, because the people were silver that was of absolutely no use to their disobedience and delinquency. If a person knows the time of judgement and the God who decreed that judgement, yet still does not repent, he or she has no hope at all.

하나님은 예언자를 보내 이스라엘이라는 혼합 금속의 순도를 조사하게 하십니다. 하지만 이스라엘 백성은 조금도 순수한 은을 얻을 수 없는 불순하고 불량한 쓸모없는 자들이었습니다. 심판의 날과 심판하실 하나님을 알고도 회개하지 않는 자에게는 아무런 소망도 없습니다.
