Introduction
The religion of Islam is one of the fastest growing
religions in the world. The reason why they are very fast in growing numbers is
nothing but of their biological growth. However, when we look up to the
teaching of the Quran, we can find some of the materials are borrowed from the
Christians sources. Further, when it comes to the teaching of life of Christ,
there are some similarities in the Quran and the Bible, but there are many
different meanings when we deep down into it. For instance, when we compare the
Bible and Quran with the life of Jesus, they both speak about certain topics
like, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, the miracles of Jesus Christ, the
divinity of Jesus Christ, the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ, the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the second coming of Jesus Christ.
In spite of all these similarities, I would like to bring
the reader’s attention to the real Christ in Islam and Christianity. Further, I
will be comparing and contrasting with the teaching of the Bible and Quran and
give the real meaning of the life of the Christ base on all these topics. I
trust and pray that people will come to know who is the real Jesus Christ in
their lives and accept Him as his personal savior and Lord. Eventually, I would
like to convey my special thanks to Michael, allowing me to write about this
particular topic. In addition, I was blessed while I was writing on this paper
and increased my faith in Christ. Above all, the more I know more about the life
of Jesus Christ, the more I love Him, and ultimately the more I want to serve
Him till to the end of my last breath. The Bible says that, “then you will know
the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).” Consequently, that
truth is nobody but the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave us the eternal life.
The
Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ
The birth of Jesus Christ is very important for the
Christianity and Islam because there are deeper meanings of this event.
Interestingly, both Christianity and Islam do believe the virgin birth of Jesus
Christ. However, both of them have their own point of view and understanding of
the virgin birth of Christ. Further, one of the greatest evangelist and
apologists name called Jay Smith says that, “Islam has little understanding of, both
historically and theologically. It is obvious that their idea of the virgin
birth has been borrowed from Christianity, but without the meaning which the
Bible has attached to it.”[1]
Then, let us look up what the Quran says about the virgin
birth of Jesus Christ and what do they believe in. In Surah 3:42-43, 19: 16-22
says
“(Recall
the time) when the angels said, ‘O Mary! Surely Allah has chosen you and has
rid you of all impurities and has preferred you to the women of all
(contemporary) people. O Mary! Be devout to your Lord and prostrate yourself
and bow along with the congregation of the worshippers of God.’”
“and
give an account of Mary in this Book when she withdrew from her people to an
eastern spacious place (of the temple). Then she screened herself off from
them. Then we sent to her Our (angel of) revelation and he presented himself to
her in the form of a perfect and well-proportioned man. Mary said, ‘I invoke
the Most Gracious (God) to defend me from you. If you guard the least against
evil (leave me alone).’ he said, ‘I am but a messenger of your Lord. I give you
(glad tidings of) a most pure son.’ She said, ‘How can I bear a son while no
man (has married me and) has yet touched me, nor have I been unchaste.’ (The
angel) said, ‘So the fact is (just as you describe). Your Lord has said, “It is
easy for me. (We Shall do it) so that We make him a sign and a (source of)
blessing from Us for the people. It is a matter ordained.’ She (Mary) conceived
him (the child) and withdrew with him to a remote place.”
Hence, undoubtedly, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ was
recorded in Islam and all of the Muslims inevitably believe the virgin birth of
Jesus Christ and yet they do not believe that Jesus is the promise one, the
messiah, to come and save the sinner of the world. Likewise, Ernest Hann
explains about this issue in this way that, “while most Muslims accept Jesus’ virgin
birth, they strongly deny that his virgin birth is reason to call him the Son
of God. Adam, they may add, was born without father and mother.”[2]
Similarly, all of the Muslims claimed that Jesus was not the son of God or even
that virgin birth has nothing to do with the prophecy of Messiah that to come
and save the world. Actually, I would like to ask Muslims to this question in
this area that they know and accept the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and not
accepting Jesus was the Messiah to come. Why? Why Jesus born with the virgin
birth and not the other prophets? Why not in the life of Muhammad? I am sure
they do not have the answer for this one. In order for them to answer these
questions, they must come to the people of the Book (Bible) and get answers
from it.
In a few words, according to my personal believe, Mulsims
has no idea about the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. They just happen to believe
because it was written in their book (Quran). However, in order for the people
to understand the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, they must come back to the
Bible and read what is really talking about in this matter. God said in Genesis
3:15, “and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed
and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the
heel." Further, in Isaiah 7:14 says “therefore the Lord Himself will give
you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call
His name Immanuel,” so in these two scripture portions, we can clearly see that
the messiah will come and it must come through virgin birth and he shall be
named Emmaunuel (God with us). This is the message that all the Muslims must
know the truth and beauty of the plan of God from the very beginning of the
human fall (Adam fall). In addition, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ shows the
purity and the deity of Jesus Christ because each and every human being
conceived sinful nature including Muhammad but not in the life of Christ.
The Miracles
of Jesus Christ
According to the teaching of the Quran, there are many
miracles that performed by the Jesus Christ. For instance, a table laden with
food, speaking from the cradle, creating a bird out of clay, healing the blind
and the leper, and the resurrection of the dead. [3]
Thus, I would like to list them out in very briefly.
A table laden with food, in Surah 5:112-114 show that
Jesus asked God to send down the food from heaven during the time of the
festival and it happened.
"When the disciples said: O Jesus, son of
Mary! Is your Lord able to send down for us a table spread with food from
heaven? He said: Observe your duty to God, if ye are true
believers. They said: We desire to eat of it and our hearts be at rest,
and that We may know that you have spoken truth to us, and that We may be
witnesses thereof. Jesus, son of Mary, said: 'O God, our Lord, send down
for us a Table laden with food out of heaven, that shall be for us a recurring
festival, the first and last of us, and a miracle from You. And provide
us our sustenance, for You are the best of providers!" (Quran 5:112-114)
Further, speaking from the cradle, there was no one in
the Quran shows that speaking from birth but Jesus Christ. For example, “He
shall speak to people while still in the cradle, and in manhood, and he shall
be from the righteous (Quran 3:46).” Jesus said to the people,
"I
am indeed a slave of God. He has given me the Book and made me a Prophet,
and He has made me blessed wherever I may be. And He has enjoined upon me
prayers, and to pay the alms, as long as I live and (He has made me) kind to my
mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed. And may Peace be upon
me the day I was born, and the day I die, and on the Day I shall be raised to
life (Quran 19:30-33).”
Then,
creating the birth out of clay, with the permission of God, Jesus created bird
out of clay and it was written in the Quran. It says, “I create for you out of
clay the likeness of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird with
God’s permission (Quran 3:49).”
Afterward,
healing the blind and the leper, Jesus did heal the blind and the leper
while he was living on this earth. In
Quran 3:49 stated that “I also heal the
blind and the leper.” Lastly, the resurrection of the dead, with the
authorization of God, Jesus brought people back from the dead. It says “I bring
to life the dead, by the permission of God (Quran 3:49).”
With
that having in mind, according to the Quran, I would like to say that Jesus was
greater than all the other prophets, including Muhammad because Muhammad did
not have any miracles that are recorded in the Quran. Besides, Jesus was born
of virgin birth, whereas Muhammad was born of human nature. However, as we had
learned in our classes that the miracles of Muhammad will be splitting the
moon, and written down the Quran but none of these are written in their Quran.
Further, let us assume that the Quran is the real word of God for a moment.
Then, what show me is that Jesus is undeniably greater than the Muhammad. On
the other hand, Muslims will say no, Muhammad is the greatest and the seal of the prophet. Nonetheless, I am just
using their holy scripture, and the Quran itself proves that Jesus is greater
than the Muhammad because of the miracles of Jesus Christ that documented in
their writing.
To sum
up, when we compare the lives of Muhammad and Jesus Christ, we can clearly see
that who has greater power and authority while they lived on this earth.
However, it is not the matter of who is greater here, but the miracles of Jesus
Christ show that he is something specials. When we look up to the unchanging
word of God, the Bible, we can see clearly that Jesus has performed many
miracles, signs and wonders among the people to show that He is the Son of God.
For instance, “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his
disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you
may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing
you may have life in his name (John 20:31).”
The
Divinity of Jesus Christ
“The Qur’anic concept of Tawhid (monotheism) is that there is
only one God - Allah. All those characteristics which can only be associated
with God must not be attributed to anyone else.”[4]
Hence, when it comes to the divinity of Jesus Christ, they do not consider
Jesus as God and they treat Him as one of their prophets send from Allah. Furthermore,
there are many scriptures in the Quran shows that Jesus was merely a man.
For
instance, the Quran indicated that, “In blasphemy indeed are those that say
that God is Christ the son of Mary. Say: ‘Who then has the least power against
Allah, if His Will were to destroy Chris the son of Mary, his mother, and all,
everyone that is on the earth (Quran 5:17).” The explanation of this verse from
the scholar of Al Razi is that how can a God (Allah) has the limitation like
Jesus in the Quran because Allah is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresence. [5]
Further,
the Quran specified in this issue is that, “they do blaspheme who say, ‘God is
Christ the son of Mary.’ But Christ said, ‘O Children of Israel! Worship God,
my Lord and your Lord.’ Whoever joins other gods with Allah, Allah will forbid
other gods with Allah, Allah will forbid him the Garden, and the Fire will be
his abode (Quran 5:72).” This is the response of Jesus Christ to the children
of Israel and saying that he is not God and people must worship Allah only. The
following verse confirms the belief of Islam in their God (Allah) and say that
God is only one. It says, “They do blaspheme who say God is one of three in a
Trinity, for there is no god except One God. If they do not desist from their word
(of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among
them (Quran 5:73).” In addition, the reason why the Muslims were not believing
the deity of Jesus Christ is that Jesus himself said to Allah that he was not a
God. Likewise, the Quan pronounces that, “and behold! Allah will say, ‘O Jesus
the son of Mary! Did you say to men, worship me and my mother as gods in
derogation of Allah.’ He will say, ‘Glory to you! Never could I say what I had
no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, you would indeed have known it. You
know what is in my heart (Quran 5:116).”[6]
Thus, these are some of the scriptures that Muslims do hold on and reject the
divinity of Jesus Christ.
In order
for the people to understand the divinity of Jesus, people must not only look
up to Quran and what they are saying to Jesus, but they must also look up to
irrevocable the Word of God (Bible). The Bible teaches that Jesus is hundred
percent God and human being while he lived on this earth because there are many
scriptures that prove Jesus is the living God. For example, there are verses
like, “I and the Father are one (John 10:30),” I am the
way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me. If you really know me, you will know
my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him (John 14:6-7).”
Above all, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I
am (John 8:58).” I am sure this is a really strong statement for us to prove
the deity of Jesus Christ with our Bible to the Muslims people. Likewise, “In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory
as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1,
14).”
In
summary, Muslims must come back to the word of God (Bible) to know who Jesus
really is. Jesus is the God of Abraham, Muhammad, and all the human being including
Muslims and Christians.
The
Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ
As I had already mentioned in previous topic is that
Jesus did perform the miracles while he lived in this world. According to the
teaching of Islam, the very core mission and ministry of Jesus Christ was to
“teach the Torah (Tawrat, the Books of Moses) and under inspiration is given
the Gospel (Jnjil), a confirmation of the Torah.”[7]
Further, many of the Muslims believe that Jesus came to prepare the way of
Muhammad because there is one scripture in the Quran mention that after Jesus
departed, he will send the messenger who will be greater than him (Muhammad).
The Quran states that, “and remember Jesus, the son of Mary, said, ‘O Children
of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which
came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of Messenger to come after me, whose
shall be Ahmad.’ But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, ‘This is
evident sorcery!’ (Quran 61:6).” Muslims believe that Jesus was just a prophet
sent by God to teach the Torah (the Book of Moses) to the people and prepare
the way of the prophet Muhammad to come
to this world. [8]
In a contrast, the teaching of the Bible show another
sight of the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. The very main essential
point of Jesus’ mission on earth was to save the sinners. In the other word, as
a promised Messiah to come, God came down to earth with a human form
(incarnation) and fulfilled all the promises that God has made with His people
and die and rose from the dead and ascended to the heaven. This is the very
fundamental message of the purpose and mission of Jesus Chirst here on earth.
Likewise, while Jesus lived in this world, he teach, preach and heal to the
people so that everybody know that He is the messiah and the son of the living
God. As I had already mentioned in above, “Jesus did many other miracles that
are not recorded in the Bible, but these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life
in his name (John 20:31).” In addition, unlikely with the teaching of the
Quran, Jesus did mention about the comforter which will come after he left. The
Bible says that, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have
said to you (John 14:26).” However, Jesus did not refer this comforter as a
Muhammad of the Quran instead He was talking about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
in the lives of believers. Muslims totally miss the point that what the Bible
and Jesus is talking about comforter (Holy Spirit) to the people.
When we compare these two teachings about the mission and
ministry of Jesus Christ with the Bible and Quran, we can see many diversities
in these two doctrines. Was Jesus merely a prophet? My answer will be, He is
more than a prophet, but He is the Prophet, Priest, and King because His
mission here on earth prove that He is the Messiah and anointed one. Jesus came
to fulfill the law of Moses and give grace to the people. The ultimate mission
of Jesus Christ was to bring the lost souls to the kingdom of God so whoever
believe in the Lord Jesus will receive the eternal life. It is not that Jesus
came to make a way for the Muhammad to come, but shows that how people can have
the mutual relationship with God again through the blood of Jesus Christ. Further,
the mission of Jesus Christ here on earth was not to continue to abide the
teaching of Moses, which is written on a tablet stone, but Jesus gave the new
commandment that is written in the human heart to follow and love the teaching
of Jesus Christ totally. Likewise, the mission of Jesus Christ was building a
bridge toward the heaven and meet with God the Father and spend the rest of the
life with Him in eternity.
As a final point, the mission and ministry of Jesus
Christ was not to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law and promises of God.
In the other word, Jesus came to seek which was lost.
The
Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
Muslims totally deny the death of Jesus Christ because
the teaching of the Quran says that Jesus did not die on the cross rather God
(Allah) took him to the heaven. The Quran says that,
“As for
their claim that they killed the Messiah Jesus, Mary’s son, the messenger of
God, the truth is they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him. They were
under the illusion that they had. There is a lot of doubt about this matter
among those who are at odds over it. They have no real knowledge but follow
only surmise. Assuredly they did not kill him. On the contrary, God raised him
to Himself – God whose are all wisdom and power. And before they come to die,
the people of the Book, to a man, will surely believe on him. On the day of
resurrection he will be a witness against them. (Quran 4:157-159).” [9]
Further, many of the Muslims’ scholars deny the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ because it is impossible for the messenger of God
to die in such a shameful way. Hence, they come up with their own
interpretation base on the Quran that the cross did not happen to Christ, the
cross would be a humiliation of God’s messenger, and the cross would be the
death of God.[10]
In addition, many of the Muslims said that someone die in
the place of Jesus Christ and Jesus did not appear at the crucifixion. Also,
people did not really kill Him, but it was something that caught up in their
mind (hallucination). Likewise, some people say likes Jesus did crucify on the
cross, but he did not die on the cross (Swoon theory). Muslims are trying to
reject the crucifixion with all of these points and refute that Jesus did not
die for the sinners at all. Since Christian claimed that Jesus die for all the
human being, they have to defend their faith that hold on for many years which
is not true actually.
On the other hand, Christian believes that Jesus died on
the cross of Calvary for our sins and resurrected from the death and ascended
to the heaven and set us free from the bondage of sins. According to the
writing of the Quran itself prove that, Jesus did not die on the cross of
Calvary and resurrected from the dead. However, we must look at the writing of
the Quran and Bible and ask the question of which book is more reliable
according to the history? The New Testament was completely compiled in the
third century, whereas the Quran was piled up in seven centuries, so the Bible
is more historically closer to the period of Jesus life and death which was
everybody accepted in those days. Besides, the gospel writers are either the
eyewitness of Jesus Christ or the disciple of Jesus Christ. Further, no one
complains the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the history. Along the same line,
all the disciples of Jesus Christ and the early church fathers, believers
sacrificed their lives for the faith that they had placed in the life of the
Lord Jesus Christ. If Christ did not really die for the sinners, there were no
doubts that people would not sacrifice their lives for Jesus Christ. In
addition, in 1 Corinthian 15:14 states that “and if Christ has not been raised,
our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” Paul is saying very clearly in
this matter is that Christ was the reason for the Christian faith. In the other
word, the message of the cross is very important for the Christianity and it is
the center of our Christian faith. On the other hand, the teaching of Quran
denies the message of the cross so Muslims can never come to know the truth
because Jesus is the way, truth and life and no one can go to the father
through him. Nonetheless, the Holy Bible clearly said that Jesus did die on the
cross and rose again from the third days. (Hallelujah)
In brief, this is
my prayer that all the Muslims will come to the place where they find authentic
Jesus in their lives by reading the Word of God (Bible) and accept Jesus Christ
as their Lord and Savior.
The
Second Coming of Jesus Christ
Many of the Muslims believe that Jesus escape from the
death and caught up to the heaven with a physical form through the power of
God. In the other word, God (Allah) preserves his life from the danger of the
death. Then, he will come again to the earth and testifies the truth about the
Islam and eventually Christians will give thanks for that. He will live forty
five years and get married and have children. [11]
Further, “Jesus will serve as a judge and will fill the earth with justice as
it had been filled with iniquity.”[12]
In addition, “The ten major signs, among which is
the second coming of Jesus, are summarized in one hadeeth:”[13]
“The
Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the smoke; the False Messiah; the
Beast; the sun rising from the West; the descent of Jesus son of Mary; the Gog
and Magog; and three tremors - one in the East, one in the West, and one in
Arabia, at the end of which fire will burst forth from the direction of Aden
and drive people to the place of their final assembly.” (Ahmed)[14]
Hence,
according to the teaching of Muslims, they do also believe in the second coming
of Jesus Christ, but in very different ways of what the Christians believe in today.
Interestingly, according to the belief of Islam, Jesus Christ will come and
live for forty five years and testifies the truth of Islam. I am just wondering
in this statement, from where they got such an idea to put it in their Holy
Book (Quran). I am sure that such kind of revelation must come from the work of
the Satan but not from God.
On the
contrary, this is not what the Bible teaches about the second coming of Jesus
Christ. According to the teaching of the Bible, Jesus Christ will come again
and break down all the works of Satan and brought the peace to this earth.
Then, he will rule a millennium year with full of righteousness and Justice and
everyone will shout and say that Jesus is the Lord of lords and King of kings.
It was not the like what the Muslims people believe in the second coming of
Jesus Christ that He will get married and have children and ultimately die
again.
To be more specific on the second coming of Jesus Christ,
in Acts 1:11 says that, “and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking
into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in
the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’” Therefore, the Bible clearly says
that the second coming of Jesus Christ is for sure to the people. However, “What
will Jesus do when He comes again? When Jesus Christ comes again to the earth,
He will do the following things, He will cleanse the earth, He will Judge His
people, He will usher in the Millennium, He will complete the first
resurrection, and He will take His rightful place as king of heaven and earth.”[15]
At the end of the day, “God has highly exalted him and
bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil.
2: 9-11).” With that having said, ultimately, Muslims (all the people) must
worship Jesus as Lord and Savior. So, this is the right moment for the Muslims
people change their minds and heart to come back to the truth (Word of God) and
must lay down their lives at the feet of Jesus Christ so that they can have the
eternal life.
Conclusion
What more shall I say about the life of Jesus Christ base
on these two religions, I will say Islam is the man made religion that put all
the human teachings and ideas in their holy book (Quran) while Christianity was
found in the life of Christ. Further, the unchanging word of God shows the real
personality and life of Jesus Christ. There are no any other ways that people
can get to know the love of Jesus Christ, but reading the Holy Word of God
(Bible). In addition, people will find false Jesus Christ in Islam whereas
people will find authentic Jesus in Christianity. The Quranic Jesus was just
merely a prophet that came to teach the Torah (Moses books) whereas, the Jesus
Christ in Christianity came to save the sinners of the world and make the way
to reach out to the heavenly Father through His precious blood. The Bible says
that, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through me (John 14:6).”
In brief, Jesus is the only way to get to heaven and that
Jesus must come from the teaching of Christianity and not in Islam. This is my
prayer that all the Muslims must come to read the irrevocable word of God
(Bible) and get the real Jesus Christ in their lives so that they can have a peaceful
life and know the beauty and the love of Jesus Christ. (Amen)
