When the steward caught up with the brothers, he said,
“Why have you repaid good with evil?”
The brothers immediately denied it strongly.
“There is no way we would do such a thing.”
They even went further and said,
“If it is found with anyone, let him die.”
This moment is not just a defense.
👉 It reveals their deep confidence in themselves.
They believed they were honest people.
So they spoke boldly, even making extreme statements
to prove their innocence.
But what matters here is not their words,
👉 but their hearts.
People often think this way:
“I’m not that bad.”
“At least I’m better than others.”
But God does not judge us by our standards.
👉 He sees us by His standard.
These brothers were the ones who once sold Joseph.
Yet now,
👉 they are confident in their own righteousness.
This is the nature of humanity.
We take a small part of goodness
and use it to define our whole life.
We rely on a few good actions
and believe we are acceptable.
But God looks beyond outward actions
👉 and sees the heart.
And sometimes,
He allows situations
to reveal what is truly inside us.
So the real question is not,
👉 “What kind of person am I?”
but,
👉 “Who am I before God?”
