Joseph gave his brothers one final test.
“The man who had the cup will remain as my servant.
The rest of you may return home in peace.”
Years earlier, the brothers had already abandoned one beloved son of their father.
If they had not changed, they could have simply left Benjamin behind and saved themselves.
But Judah was no longer the same man.
He had begun to understand his father’s grief.
He carried the weight of past guilt in his heart.
And now, instead of protecting himself, he offered himself.
“Please let your servant remain instead of the boy.”
This is one of the most beautiful moments in Genesis.
The man who once suggested selling his brother is now willing to become a slave for his brother.
Something had changed inside Judah.
And in many ways, Judah’s words point forward to the greater Substitute who would come from the tribe of Judah:
Jesus Christ.
The gospel is not the story of saving ourselves by abandoning others.
It is the story of Someone who stayed behind to save us.
God was transforming Judah’s heart.
And God still transforms hearts today.
He teaches us to carry the pain of others,
to take responsibility,
and to love sacrificially.
