Who Is Melchizedek?
- A study of Biblical, Extra - Biblical Theories and the Theological Conclusion We Can Embrace
1. Melchizedek: The Mysterious Figure in the Bible
Melchizedek appears only briefly in Genesis 14, Psalm 110, and Hebrews 5-7, yet he carries remarkable depth.
He is the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, who brings out bread and wine to Abraham, blesses him, and receives a tenth of everything from him.
This simple encounter becomes, in the New Testament, a central image for understanding the priesthood of Jesus Christ.
2. Various Interpretations of Melchizedek
How have scholars and Jewish traditions understood Melchizedek? Let’s explore some of the main theories.
(1) Historical Figure Theory - King of Salem and actual priest of God
-Melchizedek is understood as a god-fearing Canaanite king who lived in the time of Abraham.
-Within the context of Genesis, he is portrayed as a real person who actually met Abraham .
-Most traditional Protestant interpretations adopt this view.
(2) Typological View - A figure foreshadowing Christ
-Hebrews 7 describes Melchizedek as “without father or mother, without genealogy”, emphasizing his resemblance to Christ.
-This means Melchizedek serves as a symbolic preview of Christ’s priesthood.
- Psalm 110:4 “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek “, is understood as prophetic language.
*The historical and typological views are not mutually exclusive but can be held together in harmony.
3. Further Theories - Intriguing but Non-Orthodox.
Beyond biblical interpretation, various extra - biblical or speculative theories have been proposed.
(3) Christophany View - Melchizedek as a pre- incarnate appearance of Christ
-Takes the mysterious phrases in Hebrews 7:3 literally.
-However, orthodox Christology teaches that the incarnation of Jesus was a historical, once-for-all event.
Thus, this theory is generally not accepted in traditional theology.
(4) Angel Theory -Melchizedek as a heavenly being
-In Jewish apocalyptic writings like the Qumran scrolls(11Q Melchizedek), Melchizedek appears as an eschatological judge.
-He is even addressed with divine title like “Elohim.”
-However, Hebrew 7:4 calls him “this man,” indicating a personal human identity.
(5) Methuselah / Noah Identification Theory - Melchizedek as an antediluvian patriarch
-In apocryphal texts such as 2 Enoch, Melchizedek is described as divinely born child during Noah’s generation.
-This theory conflicts with biblical chronology and is based on non-canonical sources.
-Therefore, it is not accepted within biblical theology.
4. What is the Theologically Sound View?
While Melchizedek’s symbolism and mystery are undeniable, interpretation must be grounded in the biblical text and its New Testament exposition.
*Traditional Christianity affirms the following two key truths in balance:
- Melchizedek as a Historical Person
A real king of Salem who served God as a priest, A historical figure who interacted with Abraham
- Melchizedek as a Type of Christ
A priest from a line superior to the Levitical priesthood. Both king and priest -> foreshadowing Jesus’ eternal priest .
Reflection and Application
Melchizedek is not merely an ancient king. He is a profound foreshadowing of the ministry of Jesus Christ.
He was greater than Abraham, and Jesus is grater than Melchizedek.
So,
-How do i approach Christ today - with reverence, submission, and trust?
-Am i living as someone called to be a royal priest in Christ?
