At first glance, Amos 7:16-17 sounds uncomfortably severe:
“Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your children will fall by the sword..”
It’s natural to ask, “Isn’t that too harsh?”
But to understand this properly, we must see God’s justice and patience together.
1. God’s Judgment Comes After Repeated Warnings
The book of Amos is filled with divine warnings. Israel repeatedly turned to idols, oppressed the poor, and corrupted justice. In Amos 4, God says again and again: “Yet you did not return to me.”
Judgment is never God’s first response. It’s His last resort.
2. Judgment is a Pathway to Redemption
God doesn’t judge to destroy- but to wake up His people an open the door to restoration.
In the final chapter of Amos (chapter9), God promises to restore the fallen tent of David.
“Beyond judgment, there is hope.”
See God’s warning as an expression of His love.
