Return to the Word(Hosea 14:1-9)
Hosea’s Plea for Repentance
1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
2 Take with you words and return to the Lord; say to him, “Take away all iniquity; accept what is good, and we will pay with bulls the vows of our lips.
3 Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses; and we will say no more, “Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In you the orphan finds mercy.”
The Lord’s Promise of Restoration
4 I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them.
5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon;
6 his shoots shall spread out; his beauty shall be like the olive, and his fragrance like Lebanon.
7 They shall return and dwell beneath my shadow; they shall flourish like the grain; they shall blossom like the vine; their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.
8 O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols? It is who cypress; from me comes your fruit.
Wisdom to Walk in the Way of the Lord
9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgress stumble in them.
Who is God?
Verses 4-8
God is the perfect Restorer. Just as Hosea pleads for Israel to return from the path of sin (vv.1-3), God promises to remove His anger and come down like dew-gentle, constant, and nourishing. When the people receive such care, they will flourish like lilies, grow strong like cedars, and bear abundant fruit like olive trees and grapevines. Their lives will no longer need idols because they will experience the all-satisfying presence of God.
*flourish-성경적으로는 하나님의 은혜를 받은 삶이 열매맺고, 풍성해지며, 의미있게 살아가는 모습을 묘사할때 자주 사용.
Even if your life seems like an uprooted tree or diagnosed irreparably broken, no condition is beyond God’s healing grace. His restoration is never partial or temporary -it is complete and holistic(Exodus 15:26; Psalm 23:3). Like the quiet and faithful dew, God’s grace revive dry and withered hearts and anchors them like the cedar of Lebanon.
Reflection: Restoration is not just emotional comfort -it is a fragrance, a beauty, a harvest, a shelter: signs of a life fully restored in God.
What Does This Teach Me?
Verses 1-3, 9
Hosea calls Israel to return to the Lord by taking “words”with them. This means that true repentance is not about offering sacrifice or mere emotional remorse - it is about returning with a heart and life aligned to God’s Word. God does not delight in burnt offerings, but in lives surrendered in obedience (Deut10:12-13; Micah 6:7; 1 Samuel 15:22). Returning to God means embracing His Word and committing to live by it.
“Take words with you” implies intentional surrender. Our praise-“the fruit of our lips”-is not just a song; it must be tied to a life transformed by repentance.
In vers9, Hosea ends with a call to wisdom; to hear the Word is not enough. We must walk in it. The wise are not those who are only emotionally moved, but those who live according to God’s upright ways. Faith that does not lead to action is daed (James 2:17). God’s Word becomes truly living (John 6:63) when it practiced.
Is the Word I’m meditating on becoming the living Word in my life today?
