Amos 7:1-9(ESV)
1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me : behold, he was forming locusts when the latter growth was just beginning to sprout, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.
2 When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said,
“O Lord GOD, please forgive! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!”
3 The LORD relented concerning this ;
“It shall not be,” said the LORD.
4 This is what the Lord GOD showed me; behold, the Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land.
5 Then I said,
“O Lord GOD, please cease! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!”
6 The LORD relented concerning this;
“ This also shall not be,” said the Lord GOD.
7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
8 And the LORD said to me,
“Amos, what do you see?”
And I said, “A plumb line.”
Then the Lord said,
“Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them;
9 the high places of Israel shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with sword.”
Who is God?
Verses 1&4- A God Who Warns Through Judgment
God presents a series of vivid images of judgment against Israel. The first vision is of locusts, threatening the second crop-the essential food for the people after the king had taken the first harvest for national use. The second vision is of a consuming fire that swallows both the great deep and the land. These terrifying warnings are not mere threats but divine mercy aiming to shake Israel out of spiritual complacency. Through these images, God impresses the weight of His word on the hearts of His people.
Verses 3& 6- A God who hears Prayer and Relents
Even as He prepare just judgment, God reveals Himself as compassionate and merciful. In response to Amos’s intercession -“Jacob is so small. How can he survive?”- God relents. The purpose of judgment is not to destroy Israel but to give it another chance to return. God’s heart is moved by one person’s sincere prayer.
Verses 7-9 - A God Who Measures by His Standard
In the final vision, God stands beside a wall with a plumb line in His hand. The plumb line represents His unchanging standard - the Word. God declares He will no longer overlook sin and will bring down the sanctuaries of Israel. The “high places of Isaac” will become ruins. God desires His people to build their lives straight according to His truth.
What Is the Lesson for Me?
Verses 2&5- One Person’s Prayer Can Save a Nation
Amos doesn’t just observe the visions; he prays as a mediator. In response to that single prayer, God withholds national judgment. It shows the power of one intercessor to move the heart of God. Even today, God seeks one person to stand in the gap. Will I be that person who prays for my family, church, and nation?
Verses 7-9 -Examine My Life Before God’s Plumb Line
God’s plumb line reveals whether a life is built upright. Is my faith in line with His Word? Am I trying to cover up a crumbling foundation with religious appearances, expecting God to overlook it? Now is the time to examine my life before His Word and realign my heart and actions.
Reflection Question
1. Am I living as an intercessor like Amos, praying on behalf of others?
2. Which area of my life is misaligned before God’s plumb line and needs to be rebuilt?
3. Do I truly believe that one person’s prayer can move the heart of God?
