Mark 12:35-44
35And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until i put your enemies under your feet.'" 37David himself calls him Lord, So how is he his son?" And the greatest throng heard him gladly. 38And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like greetings in the marketplaces 39and have the best seats in synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40who devour widow's houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." 41And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into in large sums. 42And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43And he call his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, i say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
Thinking and Understanding
Jesus referring to David's confession as an example, pointed out the flaw in the logic of the narrow-minded people who thought of him only as an ordinary person. He went on to explain the meaning of true devotion by comparing the wrongdoings of the scribes to the widow's offering. The scribes appeared pious, but they were not devoted to God and were guilty of satisfying their greed through actions such as extorting money from poor widows. In contrast, the poor widow showed true devotion by giving everything she had, even though it wasn't much.
Who is God
vv. 41-44 God accepts sincere hearts. He does not care about the amounts of our offerings but about the heart that offers them. Although the wealthy contributed more than the widow from a material perspective, the widow's love for God was much greater than theirs. God regards preciously everything we offer with a sincere heat, whether that be a material object, our time, or our abilities.
what lesson is God teaching us?
vv. 38-40 Piousness for the sake of receiving acknowledgement and being glorified is not true piousness. The scholars of the Law were respected as teachers who possessed holy knowledge. In actuality, however, they were secular people who loved power and wealth more than God. Let's remember that piousness is not something to be shown off but something that is revealed in our conduct, and strive not to appear like virtuous people but to actually be virtuous people.
