Mark 8:27-9:1
27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, "Where do people say that I am?" 28And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." 29And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "you are the Christ." 30And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuked him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." 34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospels will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." 9:1 And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.
Thinking and Understanding
After praising Peter for confessing that Jesus is 'the Christ', Jesus forewarned his disciples that he would suffer and die and be resurrected on the third day for the sake of the salvation of God's people.
Peter immediately protected about this but was sternly rebuked by Jesus, who even called him 'Satan'. Jesus then explained the proper attitude that must be adopted by those who wished to follow him; they must be ready to suffer and willing to lay down their lives for Jesus.
who is Jesus?
vv.8:34-37 Jesus explained the proper characteristic of a true disciple. True disciples must deny themselves, take up their cross, and walk the path that has been taken by Jesus. Living a life of taking up the cross and following the Lord requires more that just a moment's resolve: it requires lifelong effort. Are we in pursuit of God's will and the values of the world?
What lesson is God teaching us?
8:33 When need to have a proper understanding of Christ and the cross. Peter was fiercely rebuked for trying to hold Jesus back from his suffering and death. This was because Peter, a disciple whose duty it was to follow Jesus, be careful not to block the Lord's path with our misdirected actions.
