때늦은 깨달음

4 “You shall sat to them, Thus says the Lord: When men fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return? 5 Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. 6 I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. 7 Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the Lord. 8 “How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. 9 The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them? 10 Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. 11 They have healed the wound of my people lightly, ‘Peace, peace’, when there is no peace. 12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the Lord. 13 When I would gather them, declares the Lord, there are no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, even the leaves are withered, and what I gave them has passed away from them.” 14 Why do we sit still? Gather togather, let us go into the fortified cities and perish there, for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord. 15 We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror. 16 “The snoring of their horses is heard from Dan; at the sound of the neighing of their stallions the whole land all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. 17 For behold, I am sending among you serpents, adders that cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you,” declares the Lord.

4 “너는 그들에게 전하여라. 나 주가 말한다. 누구나 넘어지면, 다시 일어나지 않겠느냐? 누구나 떠나가면, 다시 돌아오지 않겠느냐? 5 그런데도 예루살렘 백성은, 늘 떠나가기만 하고, 거짓된 것에 사로잡혀서 돌아오기를 거절하느냐? 6 내가 귀를 기울이고 들어 보았으나, 그들은 진실한 말을 하지 않았다. ‘내가 이런 일을 하다니!’하고 자책은 하면서도, 자신의 악행을 뉘우치는 사람은 하나도 없었다. 그들은 모두 자기들의 그릇된 길로 갔다. 마치 전쟁터로 달려가는 군마들처럼 떠나갔다. 7 하늘을 나는 학도 제철을 알고, 비둘기와 제비와 두루미도 저마다 돌아올 때를 지키는데, 내 백성은 주의 법규를 알지 못한다. 8 너희가 어떻게 ‘우리는 지혜를 가진 사람들이요, 우리는 주님의 율법을 안다’하고 말할 수가 있느냐? 사실은 서기관들의 거짓된 붓이 율법을 거짓말로 바꾸어 놓았다. 9 그러므로 지혜 있는 사람들이 부끄러움을 당하고, 공포에 떨며 붙잡혀 갈 것이다. 그들이 주의 말을 거절하였으니, 이제 그들에게 무슨 지혜가 있다고 하겠느냐? 10 그러므로 내가 그들의 아내들을 다른 남자들에게 넘겨 주고, 그들의 밭도 다른 사람들에게 주어 차지하게 하겠다.” “힘 있는 자든 힘 없는 자든, 모두가 자기 잇속만을 채우며, 사기를 쳐서 재산을 모았다. 예언자의 제사장까지도 모두 한결같이 백성을 속였다. 11 백성이 상처를 입어 앓고 있을 때에, 그들은 ‘괜찮다. 괜찮다!’하고 말하지만, 괜찮기는 어디가 괜찮으냐? 12 그들이 그렇게 역거운 일들을 하고도 부끄러워하기라도 하였느냐? 천만에! 그들은 부끄러워하지도 않았고, 얼굴을 붉히지도 않았다. 그러므로 그들이 쓰러져서 시체 더미를 이룰 것이다. 내가 그들에게 벌을 내릴 때에, 그들이 모두 쓰러져 죽을 것이다. 나 주의 말이다. 13 나 주의 말이다. 그들이 거둘 것은 내가 말끔히 거두어 치우리니, 포도덩굴에 포도송이도 없고, 무화과나무에 무화과 나무도 없고, 잎까지 모두 시들어 버릴 것이다. 그러므로 내가 그들에게 준 것들이 모두 사라져 버릴 것이다.” 14 “모두 모여라. 그냥 앉아서 죽을 수는 없다. 견고한 성읍들을 찾아 들어가서, 죽어도 거기에서 죽자. 우리가 주님께 범죄하였기 때문에 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 독이 든 물을 마시게 하여서, 우리를 죽이려 하신다. 15 우리가 고대한 것은 평화였다. 그런데 좋은 일이라고는 하나도 없다. 우리는 이 상처가 낫기만을 고대하였는데, 오히려 무서운 일만 당하고 있다. 16 적군의 말들이 내는 콧소리가 이미 단에서부터 들려오고, 그 힘센 말들이 부르짓는 소리에 온 땅이 진동한다. 적군이 들어와서 이땅과 그 안에 가득찬 것을 휩쓸고 성읍과 그 안에 사는 사람들을 다 삼킨다.” 17 “보아라, 내가 뱀을 너희에게 보내겠다. 어떤 술법으로도 제어할 수 없는 독사들을 너희에게 보낼것이니, 그것들이 너희를 물 것이다. 나 주의 말이다.”

Main idea

The stubbornness of the people of Judah, who would not repent, was so extraordinary that it is unparalleled by any other example in the natural word or in human history. Although the people of Judah realised the impending judgement against them, it was already too late.

회개하지 않는 유다의 완고함은 인간사나 자연계에서 유례를 찾을 수 없을 만큼 이례적입니다. 임박한 심판의 현실을 깨달았지만 때는 너무 늦었습니다.

Thinking, and Understanding

The reasons for God’s judgement against the people of Judah are clear. First, they were obsessed with idols and kept departing from God. Second, even though they reproached themselves, this gesture was insincere and without remorse. Third, they failed to understand God’s will and were quick to run onto the wrong path. Fourth, all the people, irrespective of their rank or status, gathered wealth by deceit and filled only their own mouths. Fifth, they were not ashamed of their awful deeds and failed to grasp any understanding of the situation they had fallen into. So, God by his own hand sent enemies, like uncontrollable vipers, to judge Judah(vv.4-17).

하나님의 심판의 원인은 분명합니다. 첫째, 유다는 우상에 사로잡혀 하나님을 떠났습니다. 둘째, 자책을 하면서도 뉘우치지 않고, 진실하지 않았습니다. 셋째, 하나님의 뜻을 알지 못하여서 그릇된 길로 신속하게 달려갔습니다. 넷째, 지위고하를 막론하고 모두가 사기를 쳐서 재산을 모으고 자기 잇속만 채웠습니다. 다섯째, 역겨운 일을 하고도 전혀 부끄러워할 줄 모르고, 자신들이 처한 상황을 전혀 파악하지 못했습니다. 하나님은 이제 그 어떤 것으로도 제어할 수 없는 독사와 같은 대적을 보내어 유다를 심판하실 것입니다. (4-17)

What lesson is God teaching us?

vv. 8-9 The leaders of Judah did not consider the law something they should obey but rather an object to be possessed, and they reduced it to nothing more than a tool to maintain their privileged status. God does not consider the amount of knowledge we have gained, but rather the time we have spent obeying him and the depth of the relationship we have built with him.

지도자들은 율법을 순종할 대상이 아니라, 소유물로 여겼고, 특권을 유지하기 위한 도구로 전락시켰습니다. 하나님은 결코 우리가 쌓은 지식의 양을 묻지 않으십니다. 우리가 살아온 순종의 시간과 다져온 관계의 깊이를 물으십니다.

vv. 10-12 All the people of Judah, from the least to the greatest, and irrespective of gender, lived serving their own greed. And they were adept at justifying themselves and knew no shame. Let’s stand again before the word and trust the word to thoroughly examine us, this era we live in, and its leaders.

유다 백성은 작은 자부터 큰 자까지 남녀노소가 가릴 것 없이 다 자기 욕심에 봉사하며, 살았습니다. 그리고도 정당화에는 능하여 전혀 수치를 몰랐습니다. 다시금 말씀 앞에 서서, 말씀이 나와 이 시대와 지도자들을 낱낱이 검진하도록 맡겨 드립시다.

Tip

8:14 The people give lip service to having sinned against the Lord when the Babylonian invasion drives them into the fortified cities(4:5).

Ultimately, they claim God has doomed them to perish no matter what they do.
