16 “As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven. And they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger? Declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, to their own shame? 20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”

21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you. ‘ 24 But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward. 25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. 26 Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers. 27 “So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28 And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline, truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

16 “그러므로 너 예레미야는 이 백성을 보살펴 달라고 기도하지 말아라. 너는 그들을 도와달라고 나에게 호소하거나 간구하지도 말고, 나에게 조르지도 말아라. 나는 이제 너의 말을 들어주지 않을 것이다. 17 너는 지금 그들이 유다의 성읍들과 예루살렘의 모든 거리에서 하는 일들을 보고 있지 않느냐? 18자식들은 땔감을 줍고, 아버지들은 불을 피우고, 어머니들은 하늘 여신에게 줄 빵을 만들려고 가루 반죽을 하고 있다. 또 그들은 나의 노를 격동시키려고, 다른 신들에게 술을 부어 바친다. 19 그러나 그들이 그렇게 함으로 나를 격노하게 하는 것으로 그치느냐? 그렇지 않다. 오히려 그들 스스로가 낯뜨거운 수치를 당하는 것이 아니냐? 나 주의 말이다. 20 그러므로 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 나의 무서운 분노가 바로 이땅으로 쏟아져서, 사람과 짐승과 들의 나무와 땅의 열매 위로 쏟아져서, 꺼지지 않고 탈 것이다.” 21 “나 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 내가 너희에게 받고 싶은 것은 제사가 아니다. 너희가 번제는 다 태워 내게 바치고 다른 제물은 너희가 먹는다고 하지만, 내가 허락할 터이니, 번제든 무슨 제사든 고기는 다 너희들이나 먹어라. 22 내가 너희 조상을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나왔을 때에, 내가 그들에게 번제물이나 다른 어떤 희생제물을 바치라고 했더냐? 바치라고 명령이라도 했더냐? 23 오직 내가 명령한 것은 나에게 순종하라는 것, 그러면 그들의 하나님이 되고, 그들은 나의 백성이 될 것이라는 것, 내가 그들에게 명하는 그 길로만 걸어가면, 그들이 잘 될 것이라고 한 것뿐이지 않았더냐? 24 그러나 그들은 내게 순종하지 않고, 내 말에 귀를 기울이지도 않았다. 오히려 자기들의 악한 마음에서 나오는 온갖 계획과 어리석은 고집대로 살고, 얼굴을 나에게로 돌리지 않고, 오히려 등을 나에게서 돌렸다. 25 너희 조상이 이집트 당에서 나온 날로부터 오늘까지, 내가 나의 종 예언자들을 너희에게 보내고 또 보냈지만 26 나에게 순종하지도 않고, 귀를 기울이지도 않았다. 오히려 너희는 조상보다도 더 고집세고 악하였다. “ 27 “그래서 네가 그들에게 이 모든 말을 전하더라도, 그들은 여전히 듣지 않을 것이다. 또 네가 그들에게 외치더라도, 그들이 너에게 아무런 반응도 보이지 않을 것이다. 28 그들은 자기들의 하나님인 나 주의 말에 순종하지도 않고, 어떤 교훈도 받아들이지 않는 백성이다. 진실이 아주 없어졌다. 그들의 입에서 진실이 사라진지 이미 오래다. 그러므로 너는 그들에게 이렇게 전하여라.

Main Idea

In the end, God told Jeremiah to stop prophesying and stop praying for the people. This was because the people had become so wicked and immersed in idol worship that they were deaf to God’s warnings.

하나님은 급기야 예언자에게 백성들을 위해 기도도 하지 말고 예언도 중단하라고 하십니다. 우상숭배에 바쁘고, 경고해도 듣지도 않을 만큼 완고해졌기 때문입니다.

Thinking, and Understanding

God gives Jeremiah the unusual command to stop praying for the people of Judah. This meant that God’s judgement had been determined and God would not listen to any intercessory prayers or please. Even though God had sent a prophet to the people of Judah to point out their sins and teach them the proper way, the people continued to live according to their own plans and foolish stubbornness. No matter how much Jeremiah preached God’s word, the people would not listen(vv.16-28)

하나님은 예레미야에게 유다 백성을 위해 기도하지 말라는 뜻밖의 명령을 하십니다. 하나님의 심판이 확정되었기에 어떤 중보의 기도나 간청도 듣지 않으시겠다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 잘못을 지적하시고 바른 길을 알려주고자 부지런히 예언자들을 보내셨지만, 유다 백성은 끝내 자신들의 계획과 어리석은 고집대로 살았습니다.

그리고 앞으로 예레미야가 아무리 하나님의 말씀을 전해도 듣지 않을 것입니다. (16-28).

Who is God?

vv. 21-23 what God truly desires are not sacrifices or offerings or empty formulaic rituals, but rather a relationship. Let’s consider whether there may be anything we do out of insincere habit or for our own satisfaction rather than for God.

하나님께서 진정으로 바라신 것은 제사도 아니고 제물도 아닙니다. 관계를 원하시지 형식만 남은 공허한 예식을 바라시지 않습니다. 주님을 위한고 하지만, 사실 자기 만족을 위해 하거나 진심 없이 습관을 좇아 하는 일은 없는지 돌아보십시요.

What lesson is God teaching you?

vv. 24-28 Even though God faithfully sent numerous servants to his people to teach the proper way of the people of God, the Israelites remained wicked in their hearts. They would not accept God’s instruction or respond to God’s word unless they heard what they wanted to hear. Consequently, it had been a long time since they had truth on their lips. God is just as faithful to us, but are we as dedicated to listening to and obeying God’s word as we are enthusiastic about preserving our own lives?

하나님은 신실하게 수많은 종들을 보내서 하나님 나라 백성의 마땅한 도리를 가르치셨지만, 이스라엘은 완악한 마음을 바꾸지 않았습니다. 그들의 입에서 진실이 사라진지 오래되었습니다. 하나님은 이토록 나를 위해 성실하신데, 나는 육신의 목숨 보존하는 데 열성을 다하는 만큼 주님의 말씀을 청종하는 데도 부지런합니까?

Tip

7: 16 do not pray…do not intercede. This is an unusual command for a dire situation. After many warnings, God has made the decision to punish, and he will not hear (respond to) further pleas from Jeremiah. This is a decisive turn; previously (e.g., Ex. 32:10-14), God would accept intercession.

Personal Respond

16그러므로 너 예레미야는 이 백성을 보살펴 달라고 기도하지 말아라. 너는 그들을 도와달라고 나에게 호소하거나 간구하지도 말고, 나에게 조르지도 말아라. 나는 이제 너의 말을 들어주지 않을 것이다.

하나님께서 정말로 심판을 결정하셨을때, 우리에게 악인들을 위한 기도와 중보를 멈추라고 하신다. 하나님께서 심판을 미루실때는, 우리에게 마지막까지 돌이킬 수 있는 기회를 주신다, 그래서 중보자들을 통해 기도하라고 강권하시고, 그분의 메세지를 전하라고 사람의 사명자들을 불러 세우신다. 예레미야와 같이….하지만, 하나님께서 심판의 뜻을 돌이키지 않으시기로 작정하셨을때는 누구도 하나님의 뜻을 막아설수 없다. 하나님은 예레미야에게 조차 백성들을 위한 중보를 멈추게 하시고…하나님의 뜻!,이 얼마나 자비로우면서도 무서운 것인가!

      적용; 그러므로 지금은 기도를, 특별히 중보의 기도를 멈추고 있을 때가 아니다. 왜냐하면 주님이 나라의 민족을 위한 중보를, 그리고 개인을 위한 중보를 멈추라고 내게, 혹은 교회에 공식적으로 말씀하시지 않으셨으니까. 아직은 기도할때이다. 아직은 소망이 있고, 아직은 하나님께서 뜻을 돌이키실 수 있는 가능성의 시간이다. 누구든 하나님께 돌아오고 변화될 수 있는 은혜와 기회의 시간, 나와 우리의 중보를 통해서!

22 내가 너희 조상을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나왔을 때에, 내가 그들에게 번제물이나 다른 어떤 희생제물을 바치라고 했더냐? 바치라고 명령이라도 했더냐? 23 오직 내가 명령한 것은 나에게 순종하라는 것, 그러면 그들의 하나님이 되고, 그들은 나의 백성이 될 것이라는 것, 내가 그들에게 명하는 그 길로만 걸어가면, 그들이 잘 될 것이라고 한 것뿐이지 않았더냐?

하나님이 얼마나 속상하시고, 답답하셨으면, 이스라엘 백성에게 따져 물으신다. 내가 언제 제사를 드리라고 했냐고? 하나님이 왜 이렇게 물으시는 걸까? 사실 하나님은 레위기서에서 이스라엘 백성이 지켜야할 제사와 절기에 대해서 명령하고 계신다. 즉, 제사와 절기를 명령하셨다. 그렇다면 하나님은 한 입으로 다른 말을 하고 계시는걸까? 글쎄,…23절에서 하나님께서 말씀하시듯이, 그분이 정말로 원하시는 것은 순종하라는 것이다. 순종해서 그의 백성이 되고, 잘 살으라는 것이다. 그렇다면 결국 제사와 절기의 핵심은 하나님께 순종하는 삶이고, 하나님의 백성으로서 살아가야 하는 삶의 방식이 아닐까?

적용: 결국, 하나님께서 우리에게 원하시는 본질은 간단하다. 순종과 그 백성으로서 잘 사는 것!. 결국 순종의 걸음을 한 걸음 더 내딛는 것, 그것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것이고, 그분의 마음을 살펴드리는 것이고, 오늘 내게 허락하신 이 하루에 대한 하나님의 뜻을 이루어 드리는 삶을 사는 것이다.
