True Blessing: When Godly Character Becomes a Way of Life
-Meditation on Psalm 112 :1-10
A call to Blessing
“Praise the Lord, Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments.(v.1)”
Psalm 112 feels like a direct response to Psalm 111. The one who has meditated on God’s mighty works(Psalm 111) naturally comes to fear Him and delight in His word (Psalm 112).
The fear of the Lord is a reverent awe, filled with both trembling and love. It is not a passing emotion - it reorients one’s whole life.
God’s commandments are no longer burdensome, but a joyful pathway to walk in fellowship with Him. Blessing belongs to those who not only hear His Word but delight in living it out.
A Blessing That Reaches the Next Generation
“His offspring will be mighty in the land: the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.”(vv.2-3)
The man who walks in the fear of the Lord does not walk for himself alone. His life leaves a mark on the earth and a blessing that ripples through generations. His children inherit not just goods - but the weight of a righteous example. His righteousness outlives him, echoing in the lives of those who come after.
A Light That Shines in Darkness
“Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.”(vv. 4-5)
He does not remove the darkness- he brings light into it. Graciousness and mercy are not ideas to him, but the texture of his life. He gives freely, not out of surplus but out of trust. His justice is not just in principle -it is practiced in every transaction, every relationship.
The Heart That Cannot Be Shaken
“For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His hart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.”(vv.6-8)
The storms may come, the headlines may shake others - but not him.
Not because he is stronger, but because his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. Fear knocks, but it finds no room. His security is not in outcomes, but in the character of the God he trusts. He stands, not proudly, but steadily - and that is his strength.
A Life That Pours Out and Does Not Run Dry
“ He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!”(vv.9-10)
This is not a man who hoards. He distributes- freely, joyfully, generously. And in this open - handed living, he mirrors the very heart of God. His righteousness endures not because he preserved it, but because he gave it away- again and again.
Honor does not come from striving, but from the quiet dignity of a life poured out. The wicked rage, but their power melts. The righteous shine - and endure.
Closing Reflection
This is the man who fears the Lord- whose strength is not in dominance, but in delight. Whose legacy is not measured in success, but in steadfastness, light, and a righteousness that echoes through eternity.
