1 In the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, i give you this charge; 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage -with great patience and careful instruction.
3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear . 4 They will turn ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
6 For i am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Verses 1-2
Paul urges not only to abide in the Word(3:14), but to preach the Word. This is the way to life-for ourselves and for others. This is the life of a Christian in the world, and the mission to transform the world . It is not optional, but a solemn command from Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and who will appear in glory. There is no favorable time for the gospel; thus, we must preach it with urgency at all times. We must speak as witnesses before the Judge, never compromising or altering the message. Evangelism is both a privilege and a responsibility given to all who have been made alive by the Word.
Meditation Question : How seriously do i take the command to preach the gospel?
Application : Lord, please show me today to whom i may share the gospel.
Verse 3-4
The signs of the last days (3:1-9) are the result of rejection and betraying the truth. Even if the gospel is preached, ,many will reject it. Truth is uncomfortable for those who live in lies and hypocrisy, and the call of gospel -placing Jesus as Lord-is offensive to those who live for themselves. So people pursue teaching that justify their own desires. If i only listen to what i want to hear , i will eventually be deaf to the truth i need to hear.
We live in a time where people no longer tolerate sound teaching. They prefer voices that tell them to follow their desires. The issue is not only with cults, but also with our own attitude toward the Word.
Meditation Question: How do i listen to God’s word? Am I filtering out the parts that convict or challenge me?
Application: when i reading or hearing Scripture , i must not ignore the verses that make me uncomfortable. Let me submit to the Word what rebukes my greed, so i may experience true transformation.
Verse 5
In a time when people no longer endure sound doctrine, the evangelist needs more than eloquence - he needs self-control, discernment, and patience. He must not be surprised by rejection or resistance, and must focus more on the judgment of the One who sent him than the reaction of the audience. No matter the situation, the evangelist must fulfill his mission without regret, without retreat.
Meditation Question: do i care more about people’s opinions than God’s will? What hardship am i enduring for my faith and gospel?
Application : Don’t give up, even in discomfort or rejection. There are moments I feel like throwing off the title of missionary and leaving this place. On hot days with no electricity, i feel like my body burns, when the burden of funding the prayer center building project crushes my heart, i want quick. But in this moment of hardship, i will remember the mission God entrusted to me.
Verses 6-8
Paul has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. He didn’t detour or quit because of suffer, nor did he compromise or settle. For Paul, who met the risen Lord, death was not the end but an offering - a drink offering poured out, the final act of worship. His death was not failure but the gateway to glory. A life of faithfulness to the end is the life of a true servant. Until the day the Lord calls us home, let us be faithful in the place He has called us.
Paul, at the end of his life, confesses, “i have fought the good fight, i have finished the race, i have kept the faith.” His death was not in vain-it was a final offering to God. The crown of righteousness is not only for him, but for all who long for the Lord’s appearing. That promise stirs my heart. I rise again today, long to stand among those who will receive that crown.
Meditation Question : Am i fighting the good fight? Can i honestly say at the end, “i kept the faith?”
Application : I must re-examine whether my life is truly oriented toward the Lord. What matters most is keeping the faith to the end. Every decision i make today must be weighed; does it align with the path toward the crown of righteousness?
