Mark 10:17-31
17And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, "Good teacher, what must i do to inherit eternal life?" 18And Jesus said to him, "What do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" 20And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth." 21 And Jesus, looking kept from my youth." 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him. "You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" 24And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." 26And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" 27Jesus looked at them and said, "With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God." 28Peter began to say to him, "See, we have left everything and followed you." 29Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first."
Thinking and Understanding
The rich young man who approached Jesus became disheartened by Jesus' command that he give his possessions to the poor and follow Jesus, and sorrowfully departed. After his departure, Jesus said to his disciples that it is difficult for the wealthy to enter God's Kingdom, and the disciples were amazed. They asked Jesus who then could be saved, to which Jesus replied that one can only be saved by the grace of God. Jesus then promised that his disciples, those who abandoned everything to follow him, would be greatly rewarded.
Who is God?
v21 God desire for us to follow only him. Jesus told the rich young man to sell all that he and give to the poor, and follow him. It was because Jesus loved the young man that he gave him this seemingly tough command. Even today, Jesus tells us to lay down the things we love more than the word.
What lesson is God teaching us?
v31 Being the first to believe and serve is a reason to be thankful, not a reason to be arrogant. Jesus said to the disciples that the first among them would be last and the last among them would be first. The rich young man, who appeared to be in first place, would end up last. Let's live by putting God first in our lives, rather than trying to live in 'first place' without the Lord.
