22And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." 23And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink new in the kingdom of God." 26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." 29Peter said to him "Even though they all fall away, I will not." 30And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night before rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." 31But he said emphatically, "If I must die with you, i will not deny you." And they all said the same.
Thinking and Understanding
While sharing bread and wine with his disciples during the Passover feast, Jesus said, "This is my body and my blood. He was explaining that his coming death was like that of a lamb at Passover. After the feast, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives with his disciples, where he told them that they would all abandon him. In response, Peter emphatically declared that he would never abandon Jesus. The other disciples also vowed to never deny Jesus, no matter what.
Who is God?
vv. 25,28 God provides hope. Jesus told his disciples that his death on the cross would not end with death but would lead to a more perfect feast in the Kingdom of God. Then he gave his disciples hope of restoration by promising that, although they would stumble, he would wait for them at Galilee. Let's praise the Lord who forgave all our sin and allowed us to have hope in God's Kingdom by dying on the cross.
What lesson is God teaching us?
vv. 29-31 We cannot fulfill the calling we have been entrusted with through our determination and resolution alone. Peter acknowledged his weakness and asked Jesus for help, confessing that he could not complete his calling alone. If we do not 'deny ourselves', we too will end up 'denying Jesus.'
