1He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things? what is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and his own household." 5And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. 7And he called twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave the authority over the unclean spirits. 8He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff-no bread , no bag, no money in their belts- 9But to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10And he said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake of the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
Thinking and understanding
As Jesus began to teach in the synagogue of his hometown, Nazareth, 'many' heard him and were astonished. However, they did not accept Jesus because they knew Jesus as son of the local carpenter. Despite the rejection of the people of his hometown, who were swayed by their prejudice, Jesus did not give up on his mission. He went on to give his disciples the authority to drive out unclean spirits, and sent them away in pairs to preach the word. The disciples were only allowed to depart with the most basic items. This was to ensure that they relied only on God throughout their journey.
Who is God?
vv. 4-6 God 'works' only where there is 'faith'. Like Jeremiah, who was also rejected by the people of his hometown, Anathoth, Jesus turned his back on his faithless hometown and moved on to other villages. There is no healing, power or work of new creation where there is no faith.
What lesson is God teaching us?
vv. 7-11 Those who preach the gospel need not equip themselves with anything other than the Lord's authority. Anything else is just unnecessary baggage. Before worrying about what we must prepare for the sake of handling the Lord's work, let's first seek his authority.
